Underground Explosion Causes Temporary Power Outage at OC Mall on Black Friday

Power was eventually restored to the mall.

An electrical vault at the South Coast Plaza exploded Friday, but no injuries were reported.

The explosion occurred just before 2 p.m. at the shopping center, located at 3333 Bristol Street, according to the Costa Mesa Fire Department.

The vault mishap stalled shopping and created a partial power outage in one area of the mall, the fire department reported.

Southern California Edison was notified about the explosion and partial outage by fire department officials, according to SCE spokesman David Song.

An SCE crew came to the shopping center to make repairs, the fire department reported.

Power was restored to the mall just before 4 p.m., mall officials told the Orange County Register.

"Although this was a disruptive incident, we're happy we were able to respond in a timely manner so folks can get back to holiday shopping and those working can get back to work," Song told the Register.

The SCE crew was working to discover what caused the explosion, the utility reported.
