Gunman Sought in Fatal Venice Shooting

A man was fatally shot in Venice Wednesday, which led to a search for the gunman, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The shooting occurred at 4:06 p.m. in the area of Brooks Court and 7th Avenue, police said.

Someone heard two shots fired and reported a man was seen on the ground, police said.

A Department of Water and Power employee tended to the victim, police said.

Images were posted to social media showing the man's partially covered body on his back in the street. Police later confirmed that the victim, a 37-year-old man from San Fernando, died.

Friends of the victim said he was a husband and who had two children, and he loved his job directing traffic at construction sites.

Residents in the area reported that construction has been changing the neighborhood over the past two years, and violent arguments with people have been blocking the streets over the past few days.

The attacker was described as a black man between 25 and 30 years old, who is 5-feet-8 to 5-feet-9 inches tall and was wearing a black hooded sweater, black sunglasses and blue jeans, police said.

Initial reports indicated the shooter was wearing some type of "Star Wars" mask, which turned out to be unfounded, according to the LAPD.
