Loved ones were still gathering Sunday at a growing roadside memorial and investigators were seeking answers after a 14-year-old boy was killed in a dual hit-and-run last week in Ventura.
The memorial, located at the intersection of Telegraph Road and Saticoy Avenue where the incident happened, was filled with flowers, pictures and a small, white ghost bike that had the number 25 marked across the handlebars — the number that Jonathan Hernandez wore as a football player for Buena High School.
"Whatever you needed, he would do for you," said Elisha Aaron, Jonathan's teammate. "When he ran that ball, it was something different — he was talented."
Jonathan was riding his bike Friday night when he was hit by two vehicles, Ventura police said.
Investigators have gone through the surveillance video from the area and identified the first vehicle as a white tow truck with a flatbed, and the second vehicle as a silver or light-colored SUV — both of which did not stop after hitting Jonathan, investigators said.
"Why didn't they stop to see if he was ok?" Aaron said.
Josie Rendon, whose son grew up with Jonathan, said her heart breaks for his family.

"He was out there alone — he died alone," she said. "I just don't know what to say to the family."
Sixteen-year-old Josie Aguirre said Jonathan was like her little brother.
"He always had a smile on his face," she said.
Jonathan had a difficult time coping with the death of his sister Meriah, who lost her battle to leukemia four months ago.
Aguirre said Jonathan may have gone out to clear his head after dealing with the fact that his sister's 18th birthday would have been on Thursday.
"He didn't text me that day," she said.
Jonathan's mother set up a GoFundMe site to support his funeral costs.
