Veteran Political Journalist Saul Halpert Dies at 93

Halpert hosted NBC4's political and public affairs program NewsConference for a decade

Saul Halpert, longtime political journalist who once hosted NBC4's political and public affairs program NewsConference, died Tuesday. He was 93.

Halpert died due to declining health around 3 p.m. at his living assisted facility in Sherman Oaks.

Halpert's journalism career spanned 40 years, in which he worked at KNXT (now KCBS), NBC4 and taught broadcast journalism at University of Southern California, his alma mater.

"Saul fills our thoughts and memories today," said Los Angeles-based journalist and friend Bob Tarlau in an email. "He was a treasure. As Warren Cereghino told me tonight: 'Saul was fair and balanced long before there was a Fox News.'"

A private memorial will be held for Halpert's family and friends.
