Family, Friends Hold Vigil For Teenager Shot Dead in Menifee

Family and friends of a teenager shot dead in Menifee gathered to pay respects and honor the life of Devaughn Perkins, who only turned 18 in February.

The Murrieta Mesa High School graduate who was home from Cal State Dominguez Hills when he was killed just after midnight on Saturday. The large gathering of friends and family in Temecula shared memories that made them laugh, cry and mourn the shocking loss.

"I know that god gained a new angel early yesterday morning," Deja Anderson, the victim's sister spoke poignantly at the vigil.

"I have my times where I cry. I have my times where I smile the joyous memories, memories I have with my son make me smile more than cry," Cori Anderson, the man's father told NBC LA. "But nonetheless, my son is still gone."

A friend and witness, Gregory Neely said he saw the bullet go through the victim's neck.

"There was this girl that was almost raped, and (Devaughn) defended her and tried to stop that from happening, so we were finding out who it was," Neely explained his friend's final chaotic moments. "A second, he was standing there with me, and the then, the bullet just went off."

Neely added, "Devaughn Perkins was a brave young man. He had a ton of integrity."

The Riverside Sheriff's Department consider the shooting an active investigation and are still looking for any information about the shooting.
