Two Killed in Crashes on Wet Southern California Freeways

Several collisions were reported early Monday after overnight scattered showers

Two people were killed on Southern California freeways Monday during widespread springs showers that left roads wet for the morning drive.

Several crashes were reported early Monday, including a fatal collision involving a sedan and big rig on the 10 Freeway in Pomona. Witnesses told the California Highway Patrol it appeared the sedan rear-ended the big rig.

One person died at the scene near White Avenue.

"The collision occurred when (the Hyundai driver) failed to slow down for the stopped big rig," according to a CHP statement. "Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to be a factor in this collision."

In Sun Valley, a crash involving a car a big rig on the 5 Freeway left one person dead.

In Orange County, an overturned box truck closed the transition from the eastbound 22 Freeway to the northbound 5 Freeway. No serious injuries were reported.

Lanes were closed on the southbound 15 Freeway in Fontana overnight due to a crash that involved eight vehicles. Minor injuries were reported in the crash near Summit Avenue.

The crashes came at the start of a day of widespread scattered showers. Thunderstorms are possible this afternoon.

The precipitation, much of which hit the Central California coast this morning, is the result of a slow-moving upper-level low. In addition to light rain after midnight, another round of rainfall is possible this morning. The rain will be scattered, nowhere near enough for flooding and heavy debris flows.

Dry and wet thunderstorms are possible, and any dry thunderstorm, which occurs when the atmosphere is so dry that rain dissipates before hitting the ground, can trigger fires when accompanied with lightning. Any strong thunderstorm also could produce wind gusts of 50 mph.

Tuesday's highs will be roughly the same, but amid cloudy skies.
