Woman Pleads No Contest to Abandoning Baby in Whittier Days Before Christmas

A "good Samaritan" heard the newborn crying and found it on the pavement, the county said.

A 42-year-old woman charged with abandoning her newborn baby in a Whittier parking lot three days before Christmas pleaded no contest Thursday to a felony count of child abuse.

Dolores Adriana Cruz, described by authorities as a transient, was immediately sentenced to two years in state prison, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Last Dec. 22, a good Samaritan heard a baby crying near the 11600 block of Washington Boulevard and found the infant naked on the pavement, said Deputy District Attorney Mariela Torres.

Police were called and located Cruz nearby, according to the prosecutor.

Cruz has remained behind bars since her arrest by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies that night, jail records show.
