Man Suspected of Grand Theft Auto in Custody After Standoff in Winnetka

A man suspected of grand theft auto was in custody Thursday night after he holed himself up inside a Winnetka apartment complex.

The Los Angeles Police Department Metro Division began to pursue the man in Topanga until he bailed out of the vehicle in Winnetka. He ran inside the complex through an open garage near Lurline Avenue and Roscoe Boulevard, said Officer Tony Im.

The residents, a mother and daughter, were clearing boxes left by a recently deceased relative when the man ran inside their apartment. The pair were able to flee their home and alerted police there were guns inside the apartment left behind by their relative.

The suspect is a 24-year-old Hispanic man wearing a black tank and dark shorts. He is 6-foot-2 and approximately 220 pounds.

He was taken into custody at around 10:45 p.m with the help of a K-9 unit.
