Woman Remains Hospitalized After Shooting as Police Search for Gunman

As a woman remained hospitalized Wednesday after being shot multiple times in Hyde Park, detectives tried to determine who shot her and why she may have been a target.

The victim, whose name was not released, is expected to survive her wounds, miraculous considering some 20 shots were fired and she was hit multiple times, authorities said. She was described as in guarded condition but stable condition.

The woman left a nightclub and had just parked on 11th Avenue when a car pulled alongside and someone started shooting, said Detective Ernie Mendoza, of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The woman was hit multiple times in the upper body.

Neighbors said it is an area known for gang activity. Police said it does not appear the woman has gang ties, but they do believe she was the target.

"She's our only witness," Mendoza said. "No other witnesses were located. When we talk to her maybe she can enlighten us on what we should be looking for."

There were so many shots it woke up Jasmin Shabazz and her children.

"My kids actually woke up," she said. "I woke up. I thought I was dreaming at first. This happened right in front of my window. A stray bullet could have come through the window."

Shabazz moved to Hyde Park from Atlanta. She now thinks it's too dangerous to live in the area and said she is moving her family to San Bernardino.

"You don't want your kids to play outside," she said. "When your kids can't play outside, it's not a good neighborhood."
