Westminster Kidnapping Suspect Apprehended, Police Say

WESTMINSTER, Calif. -- Police said a man suspected of kidnapping his wife and two daughters has been apprehended.

Westminster police said that Jose Solano Ortiz, 26, was taken into custody Friday afternoon.

Earlier in the afternoon, his wife, Jacqueline Prado Martinez, and their children -- Celeste, 7, and Cassandra, 6 -- were found safe at a relative's home in Garden Grove, police said. They were missing since 3 p.m. Thursday.

Martinez was attacked by Ortiz in the 6800 block of Homer Street near Dumont Lane, according to police. Witnesses described seeing the bleeding and screaming woman being dragged by Ortiz to a pickup truck, police said, adding that the pair's daughters were also inside the vehicle as it was being driven away. It was unclear if the girls were also assaulted.

An Amber Alert was activated on freeway signs throughout Orange County following the incident but was canceled when police located the pickup around 12:30 a.m. Friday near the home of one of Ortiz's relatives.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call the Westminster police watch commander at 714-898-3315, ext. 421, and tips may be made anonymously.
