Would-Be Robber Shot After Chooosing Undercover Cops as Victims

A young man shot multiple times by two undercover police officers who he allegedly tried to rob at gunpoint was hospitalized in serious condition Friday.

The shooting occurred at about 11:10 p.m. Thursday near 70th and Flower streets, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The wounded 18-year-old man's name was not immediately released.

LAPD Officers Judith Castellanos and Steve Sainz were on duty and working undercover in an unmarked car when they were approached by the suspect, police said.

"The suspect displayed a gun in an apparent robbery attempt of the undercover officers," according to the LAPD statement. "An officer-involved shooting occurred. The two officers each fired multiple rounds, striking the suspect."

The officers were not injured.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was in serious but stable condition following surgery.
