A man rescued six days after his car went over the side of a road in the Angeles National Forest remains hospitalized early Friday morning. He was found by his children, who searched on their own along Lake Hughes Road, northeast of Castaic.
"We know our dad, he'd never not call us, so by the time the fourth, fifth, sixth day, we knew something was wrong," said Lisa LaVau, the man's daughter.
Her father is 67-year-old Dave LaVau, a retired cable employee.
On Thursday, LaVau's adult children and a friend set out to re-trace his route from Oxnard, where he'd gone on a day trip last Friday, to his home in Lake Hughes.
"If anyone can find our dad it's us, we looked at every ravine, and there he was," Lisa LaVau said.
They found him 150 feet down the side of the road, with broken bones, but alive.
LaVau's car landed next to another car that crashed in the same spot at some point in the past. Inside that second car was a badly decomposed body.
"This is a bad section of the road, " said L.A. County Fire Capt. Bob Brandelli. "This is the 4th incident I've been on with cars over side of the road in this location."
Doctors at Henry Mayo Hospital in Valencia and said Thursdday night that he's in stable condition, had a dislocated shoulder, multiple fractures and was extremely dehydrated and in a lot of pain.
