Police on Monday night were investigating the deadly shooting of the driver of a pickup truck that ran off the 15 Freeway in Ontario, authorities said.

The shooting was reported on the southbound 15 Freeway south of Jurupa Avenue at 5:02 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

The call originally came in as a traffic collision, officials said. A witness called 911 and reported seeing a man in a black Kia SUV pull over and get out of his vehicle with a handgun in his hand, officials added.

Few details were available about the gunman.

No other details were immediately available.

The southbound 15 Freeway was shut down with no word on when it will reopen.

Countless events have been canceled due to the pandemic and the restrictive measures that have been put into effect in recent weeks due to COVID-19. However, you can still participate in some fun events safely.

Hot Wheels Ultimate Drive-Thru, a one-of-a-kind car show event that promises to follow all safety measures and protocols, offers a “no-contact family experience and includes over a mile of spectacular displays of life-size Hot Wheels vehicles and Monster Trucks,” Mattel and Raycom said in a statement.

“The track is approximately two miles long and you can see classic cars and people’s favorites Monster Trucks, as well as light tunnels,” said Veronica Avila, Hot Wheels spokeswoman.

The organizers say that the self-service and open-air exhibition allows them to comply with the requirements of the health authorities.

“We are taking all the precautionary measures and safety protocols, such as the use of masks and social distancing. Both are required here,” said Avila.

People who attend the exhibition have the opportunity to take photos of impressive cars, like the famous Bigfoot Five, the largest and heaviest monster car in the world, from the safety of their own car.

Due to the high Santa Ana winds, all runways and taxiways were closed at the Ontario Airport on Monday.

The gushing winds started at least one fire in Orange County who forced more than 70,000 people to evacuate and fueled the spread of a brush fire in Yorba Linda.

As of now there are no changes in flights, no delays or cancellations, according to the airport’s spokesperson, Steve Lambert.

Flights are currently being delayed or diverted to other airports.

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly labeled the victims involved in this case. The story has been updated.

The chief executive of an Ontario-based food company is facing charges of having sex with underage girls, Orange County prosecutors announced Tuesday.

Ian Charles Schenkel, 59, of Newport Beach was charged Sept. 29 with a count of statutory rape, a count of sexual penetration by a foreign object of a victim younger than 16, oral copulation of a person younger than 16, lewd act on a child 14 or 15, a count of statutory rape of a minor three years younger than the perpetrator, oral copulation of a person younger than 18, sexual penetration by foreign object of a victim younger than 18 and two misdemeanor counts of soliciting prostitution with a minor, according to court records.

Schenkel, the CEO of Haliburton International Foods, is out on $100,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 12 in the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach. He could face more than 10 years behind bars if convicted at trial.

A message left with the company was not immediately returned.

Amanda Emilia Perez, 22, of Huntington Beach, was also charged in connection with the case. She is accused of arranging to bring underage girls to Schenkel, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Perez is charged with human trafficking of a child, pimping a prostitute younger than 16, pandering a child younger than 16 and human trafficking of a victim younger than 16 and pimping a minor older than 16 and a count of pandering a minor for prostitution. Perez is free on $70,000 bond and faces up to 14 years and eight months in prison if convicted at trial.

The allegations came to light in October of last year when a father reported to Newport Beach police that his teenage daughter had engaged in sexual relations with the defendant, prosecutors said.

The girl accused Perez of pimping her to men, including Schenkel, prosecutors alleged. She is also accused of pimping another teenage girl for Schenkel, prosecutors said. The victims were 15 and 16, prosecutors alleged.

Schenkel is also charged with misdemeanor hit and run with property damage, driving on a suspended license and failure to provide proof of insurance, an infraction, for a Jan. 17 incident investigated by the California Highway Patrol in Fullerton, according to court records.

And Schenkel is also facing a driving under the influence case from November 2019.

Multiple lanes and a transition bridge on the westbound Pomona (60) Freeway between Eastvale and Ontario will be shut down again Friday night and through the weekend as part of the “60 Swarm” resurfacing and bridge replacement project.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing until 5 a.m. Monday, three of five lanes on the westbound 60 are scheduled to be taken out of service between Interstate 15 and Archibald Avenue, a roughly two-mile stretch.

Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said the closures are necessary for crews to expedite pavement replacement work.

The westbound HOV and No. 1 lanes will remain available during the 55-hour closure, which will also require partially shutting down the I-15/60 Freeway Interchange in Eastvale. The southbound I-15 connector to westbound 60 will be closed, with detours in place, according to Caltrans.

The work, which has resulted in traffic backups spanning several miles, even in the middle of the night, is a central part of the 60 Swarm, which altogether covers a 20-mile space.

The other part of the project is comprised of bridge replacements, costing $23 million. The Benson Avenue, Monte Vista Avenue and Pipeline Avenue overcrossings in Chino are being replaced with new spans. Alternating east- and westbound lane closures for the bridge work started over a year ago.

Most of the overnight lane closures related to the bridge replacements are occurring between Ramona Avenue and Reservoir Street in Chino.

Members of an FBI-led task force Tuesday arrested 18 people named in a series of Los Angeles federal indictments that allege narcotics trafficking and firearms offenses, including the illegal sale of five AR-15-style “ghost guns.”

Operation “Black Phoenix” resulted in seven indictments that were issued earlier this year by a federal grand jury. The indictments charge a total of 25 defendants, four of whom were already in custody. Authorities are continuing their attempts to arrest the remaining three defendants, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

During the course of the investigation, authorities seized about 28 pounds of methamphetamine, about a quarter-pound of cocaine and crack cocaine, and 16 firearms, prosecutors said.

A half-dozen of the indictments allege at least one transaction involving pound-quantities of methamphetamine. One of the indictments alleges a series of meth sales that include two one-pound deals and four two-pound transactions.

Two indictments allege illegal gun sales. Defendants Dau Quay Duong, 53, and Christopher Nguyen, 47, both of Ontario, are charged with illegal firearm sales for allegedly selling a total of five ghost guns, specifically five AR-15-type rifles with no make, model or serial number.

In another indictment, defendant Jonathan Domingo Go, 47, of Torrance, is charged will illegally selling three firearms — two .40-caliber pistols and 5.56-caliber assault pistol that is described as a ghost gun with no manufacturing mark and no serial number, federal prosecutors said.

The indictments allege a variety of charges, including conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute narcotics and substantive narcotics trafficking offenses such as distribution of methamphetamine. If they are convicted, most of the defendants would face mandatory minimum sentences of 10 years in federal prison, and some would face decades in federal prison because of their extensive criminal histories, prosecutors noted.

The remains of a U.S. Marine who was among nine service members killed when their amphibious craft went down in the waters around San Clemente Island will be returned home to Riverside Tuesday, and a roadside salute is planned along the route the casket will be carried.

Cpl. Cesar A. Villanueva, 21, drowned July 30 when the 26-ton vessel carrying him and other members of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit sank while on a maritime training mission.

According to the nonprofit Honoring Our Fallen, Villanueva’s casket will arrive between 3 and 4 p.m. Tuesday at Ontario International Airport, where a private planeside service is scheduled for loved ones, after which the flag-draped casket will be taken to Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Mortuary on Arlington Avenue in Riverside.

According to military officials, Villanueva and the other men were involved in a training exercise during which their craft was maneuvering to rendezvous with a ship 80 miles west of Encinitas.

For unknown reasons, the boat foundered roughly a mile off San Clemente Island, going down in waters about 400 feet deep. Along with eight Marines, a U.S. Navy sailor perished.

Villanueva and Pfc. Bryan J. Baltierra, 18, of Corona, were the only two from Riverside County.

There was no word on funeral arrangements for Baltierra.

A white former United Parcel Service employee deserves more than $12 million in damages after he was wrongfully fired in 2017 to appease a Latino employee, his attorney told a jury Tuesday.

Lawyer J. Bernard Alexander, on behalf of plaintiff Mason McConn, said during his closing argument in the trial of his client’s Los Angeles Superior Court case that UPS management gave the benefit of the doubt to Latino UPS driver Pedro Flores, who was supervised by the plaintiff.

Flores falsely accused McConn of racism and caused bosses in the company’s human resources to fear he might sue the company for discrimination, according to Alexander, who also said the defense used “character assassination” during trial to portray McConn as an angry man who used profanity on the job, once pounded his fists on the table and ultimately deserved to lose his job.

UPS attorney William B. Hill will give his closing argument later Tuesday.

During opening statements on Feb. 27, Hill said McConn was fired due to his “unprofessional conduct in managing employees.”

The attorney cited two clashes McConn had with Flores and a third with another UPS employee he supervised, saying his conduct fell below the standards of what is expected of a manager in his position. Hill also said McConn admitted he may have brushed against Flores during one of the incidents between them.

Hill said McConn was repeatedly counseled by a human resources manager for his interactions with the two workers, but to no avail. He also said UPS investigated complaints McConn made and took them seriously.

According to Alexander, McConn worked for UPS for 12 years and his job was to supervise drivers at the Ontario facility who distributed freight throughout Los Angeles County. McConn was well-liked by drivers and management, who commended him for his work, the attorney said.

Although profanity was commonly used by those who worked on the UPS dock, the company cited two incidents of McConn using foul language twice within 11 months as a pretext to fire him, one involving Flores and the second pertaining to another driver, Alexander said.

However, Flores never heard the alleged profanity directed at him and the other driver said he did not care because he agreed such words were used in the UPS workplace, Alexander said.

UPS management never made a good-faith effort to look into the allegations made against Flores by McConn, a 47-year-old high school graduate from Long Beach who was left “devastated” by his firing and has had trouble finding comparable work, Alexander said.

“He lost his job because the rules did not equally apply to him,” Alexander said. “UPS was the perfect job for him and they took it away.”

Police are investigating a shooting in an Ontario apartment that left two men dead and two others injured Monday night.

Residents at the Vistara Apartments complex said they heard a commotion around 11:30 p.m. on Monday that began with the sound of people shouting at each other.

“I woke up to screaming,” said one neighbor, who lives in the complex.

Another neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said that during the screaming he heard around eight muffled bangs, possibly coming from inside an apartment.

Then the screaming got even louder, sounding like it was coming from a hallway or the parking lot.

Moments later, he heard at least two more bangs and realized they were gunshots.

Police arrived within minutes to the second floor and made a grim discovery: two men dead from gunshot wounds.

One of the men was 19 years old; the other was 21.

“A couple of hours later, we received information of a third male with gunshot wounds at a local hospital. We also contacted a fourth male at this local hospital,” said Eliseo Guerrero of the Ontario Police Department.

Investigators say one of the injured men is 22 years old, while the other is 21.

“Whenever I passed them in the hallways, [they’re] very friendly residents,” said Paul, a neighbor in the complex who did not want his last name used.

He said that two or three young men live in the apartment across from him, where he believes at least part of the shooting took place. He also said he has never had issues with them.

“I guess they could be rambunctious, but I didn’t know them to cause trouble or anything like that,” he said.

Investigators said it is unclear if there was one shooter or more.

Nearly two dozen neglected and sick dogs found at an Ontario home without food or clean water were rescued Wednesday after complaints from neighbors.

The malnourished dogs, mostly retrievers and spaniels, were relying on small tree branches for food, according to the Inland Valley Humane Society & SPCA (IVHS). They range in age from 1 to 13 years.

Neighbors said the dogs were living in deplorable conditions, adding that a stench was coming from the San Bernardino County home. IVHS and Ontario police found 21 dogs on the property.

The owner surrendered all animals to authorities.

The dogs will be examined by veterinarians and receive medical care. They will be available for adoption after they’re assessed and treated.

The county of San Bernardino reports that it has been notified by the State Office of Emergency Services that Ontario International Airport may serve as the repatriation point for up to 240 U.S. citizens, including nine children, arriving from the Wuhan region of China in a U.S. State Department-chartered aircraft.

A county statement issued tonight says county departments and personnel “are working closely with our state, city and ONT partners to prepare for this possible repatriation, focusing on ensuring the arriving citizens are free of any illness before clearing them to proceed to their respective U.S. destinations, and protecting the San Bernardino County community from the possibility of exposure to any contagions.”

Ontario International was designated by the federal government as the official repatriation center for California about a decade ago, “and various county departments have participated in numerous comprehensive repatriation exercises with state and federal agencies during the past several years to ensure the county and all other agencies are prepared for this type of event,” according to the county’s statement.

The occupants of the aircraft will consist entirely of U.S. State Department employees, U.S. contractors who have been working in China, and other U.S. citizens. The aircraft will first arrive in Alaska, where occupants will be examined by personnel from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. No occupants who present symptoms of illness will be allowed to proceed into the continental United States. Upon arrival in the continental U.S., possibly ONT, aircraft occupants will again be screened by CDC personnel and monitored for up to two weeks.

The Department of Public Health, Office of Emergency Services and other county departments are establishing a reception area and temporary living quarters in a space at the Ontario Airport “far removed from the passenger terminals and other public areas,” and Ontario police and other public safety personnel “are prepared to ensure no unauthorized persons enter or exit the area.”

ONT will proceed under normal operations during this period.

Police in the Canadian city of Kingston say seven people have died after a small plane crashed in the area Wednesday evening.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has sent a team of four investigators to the scene of the crash, where they’re examining and documenting the wreckage.

A TSB spokesperson confirmed to NBC News that four adults and three children died in the crash.

They’ve said the plane left Markham, Ontario, and was destined for the Kingston airport, but went down just a few miles from its destination.

Kingston Police Const. Ash Gutheinz said Thursday there’s “no indication” there were any survivors from the crash. The identities of the victims have not been released.

Gutheinz says the area was under a wind advisory at the time, and while winds may not have been as bad as predicted, it was certainly “blustery.”

Along with the forcible rape charge, Robles faces three counts of unlawful intercourse with a minor, seven counts of annoying a child under 18 years old, two counts of possession of child pornography, one count of oral copulation of a minor and a sentence-enhancing allegation of targeting multiple victims in a sex crime.

The defendant pleaded not guilty during an arraignment before Superior Court Judge O.G. Magno, who scheduled a felony settlement conference for Nov. 1 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Ernie Esquibel, administrators from Eleanor Roosevelt High School on Scholar Way informed deputies on Sept. 26 that Robles had allegedly been involved in illicit relationships with several former students.

In the ensuing investigation, detectives learned that Robles — whose job title at the campus was not stated — allegedly “had multiple inappropriate relationships with students” who had attended Roosevelt, Esquibel said.

The prosecution’s criminal complaint lists four girls, who were allegedly victimized between August 2014 and July 2017. Their identities were not disclosed.

Esquibel said the investigation further revealed that the defendant was allegedly communicating with current students via social media apps.

A search warrant was served at Robles’ residence in the 2800 block of East Alberta Street, where alleged evidence was seized, and the defendant was taken into custody without a struggle, the sergeant said.

Robles has no documented prior felony or misdemeanor convictions in Riverside County. The Corona-Norco Unified School District was contacted regarding his current employment status, but officials did not immediately respond.

The westbound Pomona (60) Freeway between Riverside and Ontario is slated to be shut down again this weekend as part of a resurfacing project that will require additional closures until the latter half of November.

For the fourth consecutive weekend, a full closure is planned on the westbound 60, beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, between the 60/91/215 interchange in Riverside and Interstate 15 in Ontario, roughly 13 miles. The closure is not slated to be lifted until 5 a.m. Monday.

The 55-hour shutdown replicates what occurred over eight weekends on the eastbound side. Those closures started on July 26 and concluded Sept. 23.

During the first two weekends, the westbound closure was partially lifted between Valley Way and I-15 because crews were mostly doing electrical installations and did not need lane closures to move heavy equipment, according to Caltrans. However, the full closure was in effect last weekend, and the same is expected this weekend.

The westbound closures will continue another three weekends, ending Nov. 18. Caltrans noted that work will be suspended for Veterans Day weekend, as it was paused to accommodate Labor Day weekend travel on the eastbound side.

The agency’s objective is to have all the freeway closures finished before Thanksgiving.

Officials said the rehabilitation work, which entails replacing slabs of pavement, is moving twice as fast because of the closures, dubbed the “60 Swarm” in reference to multiple projects occurring over the next two years along the 60 freeway. Altogether, the swarm covers a 20-mile stretch, from Chino to downtown Riverside.

In addition to the shutdowns, intermittent and extended lane closures are occurring in the construction zone, between Euclid Avenue in Ontario and the 60/91/215. Portions of the Interstate 15/Route 60 interchange in Ontario are being periodically closed for the swarm, as well.

Single lane closures began 12 weeks ago in several locations and will wrap up in November 2021, when the $134 million pavement replacement project is slated to conclude, according to Caltrans.

The other part of the 60 Swarm is comprised of bridge replacements, costing $23 million. The Benson Avenue, Monte Vista Avenue and Pipeline Avenue overcrossings in Chino are all due to be razed and replaced with new spans. Alternating east- and westbound lane closures for the bridge work started 11 weeks ago.

Most of the overnight closures are occurring between Ramona Avenue and Reservoir Street in Chino.

The current bridges were constructed with dimensions that make them prone to being bumped by oversized truck loads. Over the years, the repeated minor hits have had a cumulative impact, requiring the two-lane bridges to be replaced.

More information is available at www.60Swarm.com, or via the 60 Swarm hotline: 833-607-9276.

The entire westbound Pomona (60) Freeway between Riverside and Ontario will be shut down Friday night and most of Saturday as part of a resurfacing project that required ongoing weekend-long closures of the eastbound side of the freeway, starting in July.

For the second consecutive weekend, a full closure of the westbound 60 is scheduled, beginning at 10 p.m., between the 60/91/215 interchange in Riverside and Interstate 15 in Ontario — roughly 13 miles. The full closure will continue until 6 p.m. Saturday, when half of the passage will be reopened for travel, according to Caltrans.

Officials said that after 6 p.m. Saturday, motorists will have access to the westbound 60 between Valley Way and I-15, leaving only about six miles of the westbound side of the freeway closed until 5 a.m. Monday. There was no immediate explanation why Caltrans decided to modify what was slated to be a full westbound closure.

The shutdown replicates what occurred over eight weekends on the eastbound side. Those closures started on July 26 and concluded Sept. 23.

Officials said the westbound closures will continue over the ensuing six weekends, ending Nov. 18. However, work will be suspended for Veterans Day weekend, as it was paused to accommodate Labor Day weekend travel on the eastbound side.

“Motorists who are just passing through are advised to use state Route 91 and Interstate 10 as alternate routes to avoid delays,” according to a Caltrans statement.

The agency’s objective is to have all the freeway closures finished by Thanksgiving.

Officials said the rehabilitation work, which entails replacing slabs of pavement, is moving twice as fast because of the partial closures, dubbed the “60 Swarm” in reference to multiple projects occurring over the next two years along the 60 freeway. According to Caltrans, the Benson Avenue, Monte Vista Avenue and Pipeline Avenue overcrossings in Chino are all due to be razed and replaced with new spans. Alternating eastbound and westbound lane closures for the bridge work started nine weeks ago.

A wedding photo depicting a scene from the Hulu series “The Handmaid’s Tale” has triggered backlash online from some who say the image is insensitive and misses the point of the show.

However, the photographer said that’s the point.

The image, taken in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, shows newlyweds Kendra and Torsten in front of the filming location for the “hanging wall,” which is a site of morbid corporal punishment where bodies of those who have committed a crime in the ultra-religious state of Gilead, a sort of dystopian future America in the show and book of the same name by Margaret Atwood, are hung. Handmaids dressed in red from the show were photoshopped into the picture.

Kendra and Torsten, who have not made public their last name, declined to comment on the image.

However, Shawn Van Daele, of Van Daele & Russell Photography, said the response to the photo is exactly what he’d hoped for.

In an email to NBC News, Van Daele said both he and the couple are huge fans of the show and book, and said he’s happy the photo has gone viral, hoping it will “wake people up to how they too contribute to the oppression and hatred that they’re rightfully worked up over.”

The eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway between Riverside and Ontario will be shut down this weekend in a resumption of resurfacing work that was put on hold over the Labor Day holiday weekend to free up travel through the area.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, crews will close the entire eastbound 60 between Interstate 15 in Ontario and the 60/91/215 interchange in Riverside, roughly 13 miles, maintaining the closure until 5 a.m. Monday.

Two additional weekend closures on the eastbound 60 are scheduled this month, over the same 55-hour periods. The final eastbound closure is slated to end the morning of Sept. 23.

The first overnight closure of the westbound 60 is scheduled Sept. 27 and will also begin at 10 p.m., then end at 5 a.m. on Sept. 30. The westbound closures will continue over the ensuing seven weekends, ending Nov. 18. Work will be suspended for Veterans Day weekend.

Caltrans’ objective is to have all the freeway closures finished by Thanksgiving.

Several outdoor events last month in Fontana and Eastvale increased congestion on detour routes, including Interstates 10 and 15, but the delays were relatively minor.

Caltrans officials said the rehabilitation work, which entails replacing slabs of pavement, is moving twice as fast because of the partial closures, dubbed the “60 Swarm,” referring to multiple projects occurring over the next two years along the 60 freeway.

Single lane closures began six weeks ago in several locations and will wrap up in November 2021, when the $134 million pavement replacement project is slated to conclude, according to Caltrans.

The other part of the 60 Swarm is comprised of bridge replacements, costing $23 million. According to Caltrans, the Benson Avenue, Monte Vista Avenue and Pipeline Avenue overcrossings in Chino are all due to be razed and replaced with new spans. Alternating east- and westbound lane closures for the bridge work started five weeks ago.

Most of the overnight closures are occurring between Ramona Avenue and Reservoir Street in Chino.

Officials said the current bridges were constructed with dimensions that make them prone to being bumped by oversized truck loads. Over the years, the repeated minor hits have had a cumulative impact, requiring the two-lane bridges to be replaced.

Another shutdown of the eastbound 60 Freeway between Riverside and Ontario is scheduled Friday night and through the weekend to facilitate resurfacing projects, but motorists will get a break over Labor Day weekend, when no closures are planned.

For the fifth straight weekend, crews will close the entire eastbound 60 between Interstate 15 in Ontario and the 60/91/215 interchange in Riverside, roughly 13 miles, beginning at 10 p.m. The closure is not scheduled to end until 5 a.m. Monday.

“Everything is going really well, and we’ve generally been opening it back up earlier than scheduled,” Caltrans District 8 spokeswoman Terri Kasinga told City News Service. “It’s always positive when we can open early.”

Last weekend’s closures were on the same schedule, and Kasinga noted that traffic impacts from the two-day TailGate Fest at Leal Ranch in Eastvale were not significant, despite the influx of people to the ranch, which is just off of Interstate 15.

The annual Norco Mounted Posse-PRCA Rodeo will be held this Friday night, Saturday evening and most of Sunday, but according to Kasinga, the additional traffic on I-15 through Norco as a result of the event should not be problematic.

According to Caltrans, the weekend closures on the eastbound 60 will continue, over the same 55-hour periods, until Sept. 23. However, work will be suspended during Labor Day weekend, and the entire freeway will be available.

“There’s a lot of work going on. We’re making a lot of progress with the paving, upgrading the ramps and installing new guardrails (along the eastbound 60),” Kasinga said.

Officials said the rehabilitation work, which entails replacing slabs of pavement, is moving twice as fast because of the partial closures, which Caltrans has dubbed the “60 Swarm,” referring to multiple projects occurring over the next two years along the 60 freeway. Altogether, the swarm covers a 20-mile stretch, from Chino to downtown Riverside.

A 14-year-old girl and her 4-month-old sister were found dead inside an Ontario home Tuesday, and their mother was rushed to the hospital.

Investigators said the father called police to the home on Tam O’Shanter Street around 4 p.m. When police arrived, they tried CPR on the 14-year-old daughter and 4-month-old baby girl, but it was too late. The children died.

Details about their causes of death were not immediately available.

Neighbors said the crime scene tape and police cars are simply out of place in their quiet community.

“Nothing like this has ever happened in the 20 years that I lived here,” resident Priscilla Roman said.

Neighbor Danny Calderon added, “It’s very sad. I wonder what the dad is going through, losing his children and his wife maybe?”

The mother was found hurt and unresponsive and was rushed to the hospital.

“It’s sad, especially when you hear about it being kids. It’s heartbreaking, sad because it’s your neighbors,” Roman said.

What led up to the tragedy and how the children died is still under investigation. The father is cooperating, investigators said.

“I just think it’s sad. Hug your kids. Tell them you love them. Hold on dearly while you have them,” Roman said.

The mother is now in stable condition at the hospital.

A few neighbors said they heard loud bangs that sounded like gunshots Monday night, but investigators have no reason to believe that was related to the death investigation.

Investigators said they are treating the deaths as homicides.

Half of the 60 Freeway between Riverside and Ontario will be shut down again Friday night and remain closed until Monday morning for construction.

This round of work includes resurfacing projects and coincides with a country music festival in Eastvale that will add to traffic along detour routes.

For the fourth straight weekend, beginning at 10 p.m., crews will close the entire eastbound 60 between the 15 Freeway in Ontario and the 60/91/215 interchange in Riverside, roughly 13 miles. The closure is not scheduled to end until 5 a.m. Monday.

Last weekend’s closures were on the same schedule. However, as was the case during the Aug. 2-4 shutdown, the Tailgate Fest outdoor music festival is expected to draw heavier traffic to the region, creating longer queues on detour routes, according to Caltrans.

District 8 spokeswoman Kim Cherry told City News Service that message signs will keep motorists posted on driving conditions and possible impacts from the two-day TailGate Fest at Leal Ranch in Eastvale.

The fest will be centered between Hamner Avenue and Scholar Way, just west of Interstate 15. The estimated number of attendees was not known, but the event was expected to increase traffic on I-15 and surrounding streets, especially in the mornings and evenings.

According to Caltrans, the weekend closures on the eastbound 60 will continue, over the same 55-hour periods, until Sept. 23. However, work will be suspended during Labor Day weekend.

Officials said the rehabilitation work, which entails replacing slabs of pavement, will move twice as fast because of the partial closures, which Caltrans has dubbed the “60 Swarm,” referring to multiple projects occurring over the next two years along the 60 freeway. Altogether, the Swarm covers a 20-mile stretch, from Chino to downtown Riverside.

The first overnight closure of the westbound 60 is scheduled Sept. 27 and will also begin at 10 p.m., then end at 5 a.m. Sept. 30. Officials said the westbound closures will continue over the ensuing seven weekends, ending Nov. 18. Work will be suspended for Veterans Day weekend.

Cherry told CNS the goal is to end the closures by Thanksgiving.

In addition to the shutdowns, intermittent and extended lane closures are occurring in the construction zone, between Euclid Avenue in Ontario and the 60/91/215, officials said, adding that portions of the Interstate 15/Route 60 interchange in Ontario will also be periodically closed during the Swarm.

Single lane closures began three weeks ago in several locations and will wrap up in November 2021, when the $134 million pavement replacement project is slated to conclude, according to Caltrans.

The other part of the 60 Swarm is comprised of bridge replacements, totaling $23 million. According to Caltrans, the Benson Avenue, Monte Vista Avenue and Pipeline Avenue overcrossings in Chino are all due to be razed and replaced with new spans. Alternating east- and westbound lane closures for the bridge work started two weeks ago.

Half of the 60 Freeway between Riverside and Ontario will remain shut down Sunday, reopening in the predawn hours Monday, to facilitate resurfacing projects.

“Everything is on schedule and going smoothly,” agency spokeswoman Kim Cherry told City News Service. “We’re hoping to make this another weekend where we lift the closure a little bit early.”

Cherry said that, last weekend, crews completed their assigned work by 2 a.m. Monday, and most eastbound lanes were opened to traffic. It’s possible they’ll repeat the routine this weekend.

There were concerns about the impact of the “Hard Summer Music Festival” last Saturday and Sunday at the Fontana Speedway, with tens of thousands of spectators expected to worsen traffic jams on detour routes.

“There were some additional backups, but it wasn’t ridiculous,” Cherry said.

No big crowd events this weekend have impacted any of the inland cities most affected by the partial freeway closure, but Eastvale’s two-day TailGate Fest at Leal Ranch on Aug. 17-18 could add to traffic woes, according to Cherry.

“We’ll be putting the word out on how motorists can avoid getting stuck in long lines for the fest,” she said.

Crews are working on the entire eastbound 60 between Interstate 15 in Ontario and the 60/91/215 interchange in Riverside, roughly 13 miles that’s closed to traffic.

The closure is not scheduled to end until 5 a.m. Monday.

According to Caltrans, the weekend closures on the eastbound 60 will continue, over the same 55-hour periods, until Sept. 23.

However, work will be suspended during Labor Day weekend.

Officials said the rehabilitation work will move twice as fast because of the partial closures, which are part of what Caltrans has dubbed the “60 Swarm,” referring to multiple projects occurring over the next two years along the 60 freeway. Altogether, the Swarm covers a 20-mile stretch, from Chino to downtown Riverside.

Officials acknowledged that the weekend disruptions are hard on travelers and businesses that depend on the traffic, but weekday work commuters are spared delays in return.

The first overnight closure of the westbound 60 is scheduled Sept. 27 and will also begin at 10 p.m., then end at 5 a.m. Sept. 30.

Officials said the westbound closures will continue over the ensuing seven weekends, ending Nov. 18.

Work will be suspended for Veterans Day weekend, though.

“Our goal is on track — to have the east and west closures finished by Thanksgiving,” Cherry told CNS.

Crews are using the closures to remove and replace entire slabs of pavement.

Single lane closures began two weeks ago in several locations and will wrap up in November 2021, when the pavement replacement project is slated to conclude, according to Caltrans.

Rancho Cucamonga-based McLoughlin Engineering Co. is overseeing the $134 million project.

The other part of the 60 Swarm is comprised of bridge replacements, at a cost of $23 million, managed by Riverside-based Sema Construction Inc.

According to Caltrans, the Benson Avenue, Monte Vista Avenue and Pipeline Avenue overcrossings in Chino are all due to be razed and replaced with new spans.

Alternating east- and westbound lane closures for the bridge work started last week.

Officials said the current bridges were constructed with dimensions that make them prone to being bumped by oversized truck loads. Over the years, the repeated minor hits have had a cumulative impact, requiring the two-lane

bridges to be replaced.

Half of the Pomona (60) Freeway between Riverside and Ontario will be shut down again Friday night and remain closed until Monday morning to facilitate resurfacing projects, and a Caltrans spokeswoman warned that this weekend’s closure may be “more challenging” for drivers because at least one detour route will be jammed with people flocking to a two-day show in Fontana.

“It’s going to be tight on Interstate 10 and probably Interstate 15,” District 8 spokeswoman Terri Kasinga told City News Service. “We’re asking people to plan ahead because it’s going to be more challenging going toward Fontana, and going through that area is going to take longer.”

The “Hard Summer Music Festival” will be held both Saturday and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., at the Fontana Speedway. Kasinga said the festival is expected to draw 80,000 attendees.

“Look at traffic conditions,” she said. “Motorists might want to consider I-210 or the 91 freeway as alternates.”

Beginning at 10 tonight, crews will close the entire eastbound 60 between Interstate 15 in Ontario and the 60/91/215 interchange in Riverside, roughly 13 miles. The closure is not scheduled to end until 5 a.m. Monday.

Crews stopped almost 24 hours early last weekend, reopening the eastbound 60 before noon Sunday, but Kasinga said motorists should not expect a repeat this weekend.

“They were doing a lot of preliminary stuff, and there were some mechanical breakdowns,” she told CNS. “This weekend, they will be covering a wider area, so if there are no equipment failures, they’ll probably work straight through Sunday night.”

Kasinga said the first weekend shutdown did not elicit any irate complaints.

According to Caltrans, the weekend closures on the eastbound 60 will continue, over the same 55-hour periods, until Sept. 23. However, work will be suspended during Labor Day weekend.

Kasinga said the rehabilitation work will move twice as fast because of the partial closures, which are part of what Caltrans has dubbed the “60 Swarm,” referring to multiple projects occurring over the next two years along the 60 freeway. The “Swarm compilation” covers a 20-mile stretch, from Chino to downtown Riverside, Kasinga said.

Officials acknowledged that the weekend disruptions will be hard on travelers and businesses that depend on the traffic, but weekday work commuters will be spared delays in return.

Entrance and exit ramps to the closed sections of the 60 will be inaccessible to traffic. Crews will use the closures to remove and replace entire slabs of pavement, according to Caltrans.

In addition to the shutdowns, intermittent and extended lane closures are planned in the construction zone, between Euclid Avenue in Ontario and the 60/91/215, officials said, adding that portions of the Interstate 15/Route 60 interchange in Ontario will also be periodically closed during the Swarm.

Single lane closures began last week in several locations and will wrap up in November 2021, when the pavement replacement project is slated to conclude, according to Caltrans.

Rancho Cucamonga-based McLoughlin Engineering Co. is overseeing the $134 million project.

According to Caltrans, the Benson Avenue, Monte Vista Avenue and Pipeline Avenue overcrossings in Chino are all due to be razed and replaced with new spans. Alternating east- and westbound lane closures for the bridge work started Tuesday night.

Officials said the current bridges were constructed with dimensions that make them prone to being bumped by oversized truck loads. Over the years, the repeated minor hits have had a cumulative impact, requiring the two-lane bridges to be replaced.

The $23 million bridge replacement projects are slated to end in the fall of 2021.

The first weekend-long closure of the eastbound 60 Freeway between Riverside and Ontario for resurfacing work will wrap up Sunday night, but commuters were warned to prepare for additional shutdowns going forward.

Crews on Friday night shut down the entire eastbound 60 between Interstate 15 in Ontario and the 60/91/215 interchange in Riverside, roughly 13 miles.

The closure continued Saturday and is scheduled to remain in effect until 5 a.m. Monday, though work may end earlier. According to Caltrans, the weekend closures on the eastbound 60 will continue, over the same 55-hour periods, until Sept. 23.

Work will be suspended during Labor Day weekend, however.

“The contract allows these weekend closures in order to expedite pavement work, rather than have night and daytime closures for long periods of time,” Caltrans District 8 spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said Tuesday.

The closures are part of what Caltrans has dubbed the “60 Swarm,” referring to multiple projects occurring over the next two years along the 60 freeway. The “Swarm compilation” will cover a 20-mile stretch, from Chino to downtown Riverside, Kasinga said.

Officials said the westbound closures will continue over the ensuing seven weekends, ending

Nov. 18. Work will be suspended for Veterans Day weekend, though.

Closures for 2020 have not been announced.

Entrance and exit ramps to the closed sections of the 60 will be inaccessible to traffic. Crews will use the closures to remove and replace entire slabs of pavement, according to Caltrans.

The agency is recommending that motorists use state Route 91, Interstates 10, 15 and 215 during the shutdowns. Surface streets in Jurupa Valley and Riverside will also be available for east-west travel.

Single lane closures began Monday night in several locations and will end in November 2021, when the pavement replacement project is slated to conclude, according to Caltrans.

Officials said the current bridges were constructed with dimensions that make them susceptible to being bumped by oversized truck loads.

Over the years, the repeated minor hits have had a cumulative impact, requiring the two-lane bridges to be replaced.

Alternating east- and westbound closures of the 60 at the site of each bridge are also planned.

The Pomona 60 Freeway between Riverside and Chino will be partially shut down Friday night to Monday morning and on multiple occasions into the fall to facilitate resurfacing and other projects, collectively known as the “60 Swarm,” according to Caltrans.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, crews are scheduled to close the entire eastbound 60 between Interstate 15 in Ontario and the 60/91/215 interchange in Riverside. The closure will end at 5 a.m. Monday. According to Caltrans, the weekend nighttime closures on the eastbound 60 will continue, over the same 55-hour periods, until Sept. 9.

The first overnight closure of the westbound 60 is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 20, and will also begin at 10 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. Monday.

Officials said the westbound closure will span the same 55-hour period that weekend — and in the ensuing six weekends, ending Oct. 28.

Closures for 2020 have not been announced.

Entrance and exit ramps to the closed sections of the 60 will be inaccessible to traffic. Crews will use the closures to remove and replace entire slabs of pavement, according to Caltrans.

The agency is recommending that motorists travel Interstate 10 or state Route 91 during the shutdowns. However, surface streets in Jurupa Valley and Riverside will also be available.

In addition to the shutdowns, intermittent and extended lane closures are planned in the 20-mile construction zone, between Euclid Avenue in Ontario and the 60/91/215, officials said, adding that portions of the Interstate 15/Route 60 Interchange in Ontario will also be periodically off-limits for the duration of construction.

Single lane closures will begin Monday night in several locations and end in November 2021, when the pavement replacement project is slated to conclude, according to Caltrans.

Rancho Cucamonga-based McLoughlin Engineering Co. is overseeing the $134 million project.

Alternating east- and westbound closures of the 60 at the site of each bridge are also planned, but officials were not specific about the timing.

The $23 million bridge replacement projects are slated to wrap up in the fall of 2021.

A toddler was at the center of a close call on Lake Michigan this week after his mother lost hold of an inflatable duck with the young boy on it and the floatie was quickly carried away by the wind.

What began as a peaceful day at the lake in Michigan City, Indiana, quickly turned to panic Monday afternoon.

A witness began waving for help after the mom lost hold of the inflatable duck.

The scene was captured on video, showing the floatie quickly being pulled out into the lake.

“I’m thinking this is going really bad, really fast,” said Dave Benjamin with the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, who was at the beach that day.

The water safety instructor from Homewood began paddling out on a paddle board in an effort to save the child.

Benjamin said things took a terrifying turn when the child fell off the duck as he paddled closer. At that point the child was relying on arm floaties.

“He’s being very active, moving, crying and then he fell off and now I’m just like, you know, we’ve got seconds if those floaties don’t keep him up,” Benjamin said.

Benjamin called to a nearby boat for help as he said the child started bobbing in the water, his hands “in the drowning posture.”

Thankfully, a woman in the boat heard the cries for help and jumped in with a life jacket to save the child.

“If that boat wasn’t there, there’s a strong likelihood that toddler could’ve submerged before I could’ve gotten there,” he said.

It’s not the first time a large floatie has led to a rescue, but a similar incident ended in tragedy this week on Lake Ontario when three men jumped into to save a child from a raft that floated away. The child’s mother had tried to swim after the raft, but didn’t make it.

“It was kind of a windy day and the raft started moving,” said Durham, Ontario police Officer Dave Selby. “It got out about 25-30 feet away from her and I think she realized what happened and she went after the child and she was not a very good swimmer.”

Benjamin stressed the importance of being aware of the winds on the lake.

Dozens of people were violently slammed off the ceiling of a jetliner that encountered unexpected and intense turbulence over the Pacific Ocean Thursday.

An Air Canada flight to Australia made an emergency landing in Honolulu after 37 people were injured, nine seriously, during the sudden loss of altitude that sent people flying into the luggage compartments and aisles of the airplane.

The flight from Vancouver to Sydney encountered “un-forecasted and sudden turbulence,” about two hours past Hawaii when the plane diverted to Honolulu, Air Canada spokeswoman Angela Mah said in a statement.

“The plane just dropped,” passenger Stephanie Beam told The Associated Press. “When we hit turbulence, I woke up and looked over to make sure my kids were buckled. The next thing I knew there’s just literally bodies on the ceiling of the plane.”

A woman behind her hit the ceiling so hard that she broke the casing of an oxygen mask, said Beam, of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Of the 37 passengers and flight crew members injured, nine had serious injuries, emergency responders said. Thirty people were taken to hospitals.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services Chief Dean Nakano said the injured ranged in age from children to the elderly. Customs agents and emergency responders met passengers at the gate at the Honolulu airport to ensure they could get medical attention quickly.

Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman Shayne Enright said injuries included cuts, bumps, bruises, neck pain and back pain. More than two dozen people were taken to hospitals, she said.

Llyn Williams was traveling with his wife Erica Daly back to their home in Sydney, Australia. His wife was injured and taken to the hospital.

He said when they hit the violent turbulence, “everybody who was not seated and belted in hit the roof, almost everybody in our cabin.”

Williams described the cabin afterward as frightening, with plastic lying around and oxygen masks dangling. “A lot of blood everywhere,” he said. “It was really quite scary.”

Andrew Szucs, originally from Ontario but now living in Sydney, was not injured.

There had been turbulence before the abrupt drop and he was awake, bracing himself.

“Then all of a sudden the plane dropped and went sideways,” Szucs said. “And that’s when the people who were strapped in flew, hit the ceiling.”

He said the pilot came on the radio and said they didn’t see the turbulence on radar and had “no warning this kind of air drop was going to happen.”

Babies and children were crying as crew members went through the cabin assessing injuries. About 15 minutes later, there was an announcement asking for passengers who are medical professionals to help, Beam said.

Sandy Marshall of Sydney was injured, with her two children unhurt.

“I didn’t have my seat belt on at the time. My child was sleeping on me, and I went straight up into the ceiling,” she said.

Most of the impact was to her head, but she also suffered a laceration under her right eye, bruising and muscular pain in her neck.

The turbulence happened at 36,000 feet (10,973 meters) about 600 miles (966 kilometers) southwest of Honolulu, said U.S. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.

The Boeing 777-200 was carrying 269 passengers and 15 crew members, according to Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick.

Air Canada was arranging hotel accommodations and meals in Honolulu and options for resuming the flight.

“If we’re going to be stuck somewhere, I can think of worse places,” said Beam, traveling with her 10- and 11-year-old children.

A 23-year-old man from La Puente was stabbed to death in Malibu at the Los Angeles/Ventura county line in the parking lot of a popular restaurant in a fight between two car enthusiasts, authorities said Sunday.

Ontario resident Daniel Maldonado, 30, was arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the alleged assault and was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail, said Sgt. Marta Bugarin of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

The group of car enthusiasts met in the parking lot of Neptune’s Net, 42505 Pacific Coast Highway, after operating hours where Maldonado became involved in a dispute with the La Puente resident, over a previously unresolved issue, Bugarin said.

“The incident escalated into a physical fight, during which Maldonado used a knife to stab the victim several times,” she said.

Witnesses called 911 a little after 10:55 p.m. Saturday and paramedics pronounced the 23-year-old man dead at the scene, she said.

At least 30 people were at the scene when firefighters with the Ventura County Fire Department arrived, according to sources at the scene.

Neptune’s Net is a popular seafood restaurant that opened in the 1950s and has been featured in the movies, “Fast & Furious,” “Iron Man 3” and “Point Break.”

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department asked anyone with information regarding the death to call them at 805-384-4727.

The California Highway Patrol pursued a motorcycle traveling at high speeds across multiple freeways Saturday night, with the chase ending in a dramatic, aggressive move in Upland.

The pursuit started in Baldwin Park on the 60 Freeway near the 57 Freeway around 9:45 p.m., according to the CHP. The CHP said it originally initiated a stop because the motorcycle had no plates and was speeding.

Newschopper4 Bravo was over the chase around 10 p.m., as the motorcycle was evading police and traveling at about 130 mph on the 210 Freeway.

Around 10:10 p.m., the driver got off the 210 Freeway drove on surface streets near Ontario Airport. As the driver traveled on surface streets, he began to drive slightly less recklessly at lower speeds, even stopping at red lights.

This abidance of traffic lights, however, played a vital role in concluding the pursuit.

After quickly hopping on and off the 10 Freeway westbound, the motorcycle came to a stop at a traffic light on Euclid Avenue. While the driver was waiting at the stop light, a CHP cruiser dramatically came from behind and cut off the motorcycle’s path forward. Instantly, the cruiser’s passenger side door popped open and the driver was pulled off the standing bike.

The officer driving the cruiser came around and helped his partner put the man in handcuffs.

The bold, direct move worked for the CHP without anyone getting hurt, with the pursuit ending on the border of Upland and Ontario, just off the 10 Freeway on Euclid Avenue.

Leon Redbone, the acclaimed singer and guitarist who performed jazz, ragtime and Tin Pan Alley-style songs, died Thursday, according to a statement released by his family.

No details about his death were provided.

Redbone’s career got a boost in the early 1970s when Bob Dylan met him at the Mariposa Folk Festival in Ontario, Canada, and praised his performance. Dylan said that if he ever started a label, he would have signed Redbone.

“Leon interests me,” Dylan said in an interview with Rolling Stone in 1974. “I’ve heard he’s anywhere from 25 to 60, I’ve been (a foot and a half from him) and I can’t tell, but you gotta see him. He does old Jimmie Rodgers, then turns around and does a Robert Johnson.”

Dylan wasn’t the only one who didn’t know Redbone’s real age since the performer never directly answered questions about his origin or age. The Thursday statement announcing his death explained that “Leon Redbone crossed the delta for that beautiful shore at the age of 127. He departed our world with his guitar, his trusty companion Rover, and a simple tip of his hat.”

“I don’t do anything mysterious on purpose. I’m less than forthcoming, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I’m mysterious. It just means I’m not inclined to go there,” Redbone was quoted saying in the same statement.

Redbone retired from performing in 2015 because his health had “been a matter of concern for some time” — a spokesman for singer said at the time — and it was “too challenging for him to continue the full range of professional activities.”

He released his debut album, “On the Track,” in 1975, and dropped 16 albums throughout his career.

Most often dressed in a white suit with a string tie, wearing glasses and a panama hat, Redbone performed twice on “Saturday Night Live” in its first season (1975-1976) and was a frequent guest on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.”

He voiced Leon the Snowman in the 2003 Christmas comedy “Elf,” starring Will Ferrell, and sang “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” a duet with Zooey Deschanel, for the film.

Redbone also sang the theme song for the TV series “Mr. Belvedere” and “Harry and the Hendersons.”

A 16-minute documentary about his life aptly titled “Please Don’t Talk About Me When I’m Gone” was released last year.

California police have arrested two men in connection with the seizure of 500 pounds (227 kilograms) of methamphetamine valued at $1.25 million.

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported Saturday that the operation also led to the confiscation of $38,000 in cash, five rifles, six handguns, and 40 grams (1.4 ounces) of fentanyl at an Apple Valley auto body repair shop.

Police say 55-year-old Manuel Gallardo of Apple Valley and 21-year-old Daniel Gonzalez of Ontario were arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell, transporting meth for sale and possession of meth while armed.

Some may think paying $5 for a cup of coffee is a bit much. But how about paying $75 for a cup?

It’s real, and it’s at Klatch Coffee.

What is so special about the “world’s most expensive coffee”? Aside from placing No. 1 in the Best of Panama coffee competition, it set a record price of $803 per pound, according to Klatch Coffee.

There were only 100 pounds of this coffee available for the world. And most of that went to Japan, China and Taiwan.

Luckily, Klatch was able to get their hands on these beans for North America.

The limited quantity of this coffee is what explains the hefty price tag.

Although you might not find this specific coffee at the Klatch locations in Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, San Dimas, Redondo Beach, Fontana, San Francisco and LAX, it is available online.

Check out Klatch Coffee’s website to order the Elida Natural Geisha before it’s sold out.

Residents near an Ontario paper and cardboard recycling yard that went up in flames Tuesday were told to stay indoors but some used hoses in the hopes of preventing flying embers from torching their homes.

The fire was reported at JC Horizon Recycling on Main Street. It was the second fire that erupted at the recycling plant in the past three years.

The cause of that fire was deemed undetermined, fire officials said Tuesday.

Residents don’t understand why it has happened again.

“It is scary,” said Michelle Kesler.

The site sits near a railroad and train traffic was being diverted around the fire.

The smoke didn’t affect nearby Ontario Airport.

The U.S. Census Bureau released a report Thursday showing Riverside County is not only one of the most populous counties in the country, but one of the fastest growing.

Southwestern states dominated the census bureau’s report of county growth for 2017 through 2018 with Los Angeles County leading the list for most populous.

Riverside County was ranked fifth for population growth.

The U.S. Census Bureau released a report April 18, 2019, showing Riverside County is not only one of the most populous counties in the country, but one of the fastest growing.

Figures showed that during the 12-month period ending July 1, 2018, the county’s population expanded by 33,534 people, a near 1.5% growth from last year.

The numeric growth was topped again this year by Maricopa County, Arizona, where the population swelled by 81,244 — the largest growth in the country — during the same period, according to the Census Bureau.

Maricopa also had extraordinary growth in 2016-2017, with 73,650 people coming into the county.

Riverside County was the only one in California to make the top 10 for largest gainers in the latest report, while Texas had four counties ranked in growth categories.

Among the most populous counties nationally, Riverside ranked 10th for total population as of July 1, 2018, with an estimated 2.45 million people.

That compares with an estimated population of 2.42 million in June 2017. The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario metropolitan statistical area ranked eighth among the top 10 highest gaining metro areas in terms of population in 2017-18. The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario MSA was at seventh in the prior analysis for 2016-17, according to federal officials.

The metro area’s population was about 4.62 million in the 12-month period ending July 1, 2018. In June 2017, the population was around 4.57 million, representing a year-over-year growth rate of roughly 1 percent.

No other metro area in California landed in the largest gaining category. The most populous county was Los Angeles County with just over 10.1 million residents — a near 300,000 gain from 2010.

The Census Bureau’s analysis covered 3,142 counties and 390 metropolitan areas.

What to Know

Former West Covina Mayor Mike Spence was found unconscious in a hotel room in Costa Mesa on May 4, 2018

A woman placed a call to 911 suggesting he had overdosed on heroin.

Spence was not arrested, but police filed a case with prosecutors who found no evidence of a crime

Mike Spence, a former Southern California mayor and longtime conservative activist who openly struggled with substance abuse, was found dead in a Southern California motel room. He was 52.

An autopsy is pending. Police said an initial investigation is looking into the possibility of an overdose, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported Friday.

Spence was a former mayor of West Covina, a former president of the conservative California Republican Assembly and a familiar figure in state GOP circles.

Authorities were summoned to the Ontario, California, hotel after staff reported finding an unresponsive man in a room. Spence was pronounced dead at the scene.

Last May, police found Spence unconscious in a Costa Mesa, California, hotel with what were described as controlled-substance items. He was later stripped of the title of mayor. He pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of methamphetamine after driving his car into a utility pole in 2016.

His substance abuse problems belied his reputation as a devout, conservative politician known to rail against runaway government spending, liberal values and taxes.

He accused Republican moderates of “castrating conservative ideas” in 2011 when they proposed a rewrite of the California Republican Party platform that retreated from opposition to same-sex adoption and avoided any mention of overturning the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion.

Steve Frank, a conservative activist and blogger who had known Spence for decades, said friends had tried to steer Spence into rehabilitation programs to deal with his “demons.”

“How could you say that someone who is a devout Mormon and as solid a conservative as you would want to know … is a drug addict?” he asked.

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who left a gun in his 8-year-old son’s backpack a year ago pleaded guilty Wednesday to an infraction and was immediately sentenced to 80 hours of community service.

Manuel Murillo, 37, was off-duty when he put the loaded service weapon in his son’s backpack last April 11 by mistake, then dropped off the child with a caretaker, according to his attorney, Michael D. Schwartz.

The caretaker noticed the gun about 25 minutes later and contacted Fullerton police.

Murillo was charged last June with misdemeanor counts of child abuse and endangerment, storage of firearms accessed by children, and criminal storage of a firearm accessible to a child. Those charges were dropped as part of the plea deal, in which he admitted an infraction of leaving an unattended handgun in a vehicle.

Schwartz told City News Service when charges were announced last year that it was an “accident.” The backpack and the deputy’s gym bag are dark and he put his service revolver and badge in the backpack by mistake, Schwartz said.

“The kid had no idea it was there,” Schwartz said.

When Murillo couldn’t find his gun and badge, he quickly called his ex-wife and said he thought he mixed up the bags, Schwartz said.

Murillo, who lives in Ontario, has worked as a deputy for about a dozen years and “is a good employee with no problems in his background,” his attorney said.

What to Know

Joey is a two-legged chihuahua that was found in a parking lot on Feb. 12.

A family from Arizona has adopted the dog.

The family says they want to get a wheelchair for Joey.

A week into his new home and the sweet two legged pooch named Joey is living comfortably with his adopted family in Arizona.

Danielle Bressi who has a soft spot for disabled dogs adopted Joey Feb. 26 and drove nearly 500 miles from her home in Tucson, Arizona to Pomona to pick him up. On the way home, little Joey, named for a baby kangaroo, curled up with Bressi’s daughter in the back seat.

“He stayed right on her lap. He knew, ‘this is my family now,'” Bressi said. “He curled up in my lap as I drove.”

Joey was found abandoned Feb. 12 in a church parking lot in Ontario. Veterinarians at the Inland Valley Humane Society don’t know what happened to the dog, but they were able to save it and nurse it back to health.

Bressi saw the story on Facebook and instantly fell in love. Joey eats kibble — the hard kind — but he doesn’t miss a chance from time to time to snatch a pepperoni pizza from the kitchen table.

Joey is also bonding well with Max, Bressi’s other dog whose hind legs are paralyzed. He’s doesn’t show signs of aggression, and he hops around the house to get his bearings.

Bressi said her heart melted because little Joey reminded her of her previous dog that died in 2017. Now Joey’s going to get his own special wheelchair so he can get around easier on his own.

“I’m just so happy we got the chance to adopt him and make him part of our family,” said Bressi. “It’s like having a little baby.”
