Truly Bad Auto Ideas

Some of the worst ideas in auto development are on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

Detroit had its problems long before the latest economic turn.  Over the years, independent car makers as well as the "Big Three" all tried inventions and innovations that were better left on the shelf.

There was everything from a giant fan blade to make the car move to headlights that turn with the steering wheel.  They are the kinds of ideas that make the Edsel look successful.

The exhibit is at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles from now until Sept. 20.
