Zipcar Expands in Southern California

Car rental service focuses on college students

The car-sharing company Zipcar announced Thursday that it plans to open a new regional office in Hollywood and make more cars available around Southern California.

Zipcar has been in southland since 2006, but the cars have mostly been limited to the campuses of USC and UCLA and the Hollywood area. The company has now also added vehicles to several other schools, including Loyola Marymount University, Occidential College, UC Irvine and Pomona College.

The Zipcar model includes gasoline, reserved parking spots, insurance, roadside assistance and up to 180 miles per day, which is all included in the hourly and daily rates. Those rates will run drivers roughly $8 per hour or $70 per day. Members can also reserve short-term day or hourly rentals online.

Zipcar will open its new office early next month.

The company has about 650,000 members and 9.500 vehicles in urban areas and college campuses throughout the United States, Canada and United Kingdom.
