Camp, as a theme, an idea, and a calling, is proving to be too hot as we head into one of the hottest months of the year.
Look to the many camping-themed products on various craft sites -- why yes we do need a stuffed campfire made of felt -- to Netflix's new buzzy series "Wet Hot American Summer." And, of course, many a kid has attended some sort of clown and/or skateboard and/or magic camp in recent weeks.
But Descanso Gardens is going one better, camp-style, and this outdoorsy to-do is just for the grown-ups. Nope, it doesn't involve a sleeping bag, so phew, just you showing up on a specific Wednesday night for The Lakeside Lounge.
The confab, which'll spread out at the La Cañada Flintridge garden's new Oak Woodland, is all about summoning "the fun of summers past." So think "retro camp crafts" but fashioned for the 21-and-over set.
A set that may be inclined to sip craft brews from Golden Road or eat fresh bites from Patina. Both will be for sale during the evening. Not exactly traditional camp canteen fare. More camp vittles for a new, sophisticated you.
There shall be vinyl and DJs and the enjoyment of notes heard in an aural fashion, too. Staring at trees, while you make crafts and sip beer and listen to music, seems like it is up there on the Official Pleasant Meter.
Dates are Wednesday, Aug. 12 and Wednesday, Aug. 19. If you don't need more crafts for the den shelf, and you're looking for more of an all-family thing to do, Descanso has several summer night happenings afoot, all of a song-filled, be-in-nature nature.
