Beth Lapides at Highways Performance Space

Los Angeles is literally teeming with fabulous Renaissance types. We suppose we more accurately call them "hyphenates" around these parts (said with affection, of course). Beth Lapides, who brings her funny one-woman show to Highways Performance Space this Friday and Saturday, is one such hyphenate, but she has way more than one hyphen in her title. She could be called "comedian/actress/hostess
/author/teacher/performance artist" for starters. She's also one of those rare souls who spots hilarious potential and gathers it 'round so that others might appreciate it.

We loved the concept behind "The Other Network," a festival Lapides created to bring unaired television pilots to appreciative audiences (a brilliant idea since many Angelenos have been stung by working on a wonderful pilot only to see it keel over and die). Her most well-known show, the long-running "Un-Cabaret," made Lapides a favorite on the LA comedy scene, so we're expecting her gig this weekend -- "100% Happy 88% of the Time" -- to be insightful and dripping with wit.

Lapides, who has appeared on "Sex and the City," calls her new show "Theater of Consciousness," so expect some deep thoughts/belly laughs. A hyphenated performer producing hyphenated emotions? Very meta.

Friday and Saturday, November 7 and 8
