With the Fourth of July fast approaching, authorities are once again reminding Angelenos that fireworks are a bad idea.
"Fireworks of any kind, including the 'Safe and Sane' variety, are illegal within the city of Los Angeles, and law enforcement will enforce appropriate laws," according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department.
Offenders face up to one year in jail and fines up to $1,000, City News Service reported.
"Fireworks are extremely dangerous, and every year, numerous children and adults are injured as a result of playing with fireworks," according to the LAPD statement. "There is a very high degree of fire danger from fireworks, especially during the dry brush season."
An estimated 7,000 people nationwide were taken to the emergency room for fireworks-related injuries in 2008, according to safejuly4th.org.
