Free Rocking Around the Rink Opens

A quartet of concerts rocks Pershing Square.

Let's take a moment to look back, with fondness, upon the '80s, and all of the ice skating-appropriate wear the decade bestowed upon a grateful public.

Leg warmers gets the top spot, natch. Those slouchy "Flashdance" sweatshirts. Bubble jackets. All could be, and should be, worn to a skating rink. And look at this: You will get the opportunity to do just that, when Pershing Square kicks off "Rock Around the Rink" on Wednesday, Dec. 15.

The neon-hued news: Four '80s-esque bands will indeed rock the rink, live, while people skate or just hang back and listen. The Motels open things on Wednesday, Dec. 15, but the Spazmatics and Slim Jim Phantom of the Stray Cats and Flashback Heart are all scheduled on Wednesday just to come.

And unlike those dayglo leg warmers you bought when they first debuted, at a very pricey price, Rock Around the Rink is totally free. If you want to skate that'll be extra, but the grooving-out is gratis.

And if you go slouchy sweatshirt out on the ice, best wear a tee underneath. It does get chilly.
