Let's Horse Around All Weekend

It's Ladies' Day Friday at the Breeders' Cup

Five races Friday  belong to females, including the Ladies' Classic headliner, Friday at Santa Anita. On Saturday, unbeaten mare Zenyatta takes on the boys when she puts her 13-0 record on the line at the Breeders Cup.

That means she won't be competing Friday. Her competitors didn't seem broken up about her absence from the Ladies' Classic.

"If you're going to run in a race like this, you're certainly happy to see an undefeated filly go elsewhere," said trainer Josie Carroll, whose Careless Jewel is the 2-1 second choice in the race formerly known as the Distaff.

"It breaks my heart that Zenyatta is not in the race," joked Marty Wygod, owner of Ladies Classic contender Life is Sweet.

The $500,000 Breeders' Cup Marathon opened Friday. The $2 million main event is the Ladies' Classic, which was won by Life Is Sweet.

Another famous filly -- Rachel Alexandra -- won't compete this weekend. The 3-year-old, who ran against males and won three times, pulled out of the event.
