Honoring Earth Day Around LA

Find the perfect way to celebrate the 40th anniversary.

A 40th anniversary is usually an all-out affair. Earth Day is turning 40 in 2010, and several spots around LA and California are pulling out the stops. Which, really, is done every year, and should be done every year.

But since this is a bigger birthday, we should all be inclined to make a bigger effort, and sustain that effort well past April. Earth Day falls on April 22, but on Saturday, April 17, a few spots'll be hanging the proverbial streamers and balloons:

Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica is hosting a free festival on April 17. There will be booths devoted to green topics, kidly to-dos, and shark adoption. We're intrigued. 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Los Angeles Zoo is also celebrating on Saturday, April 17 as well as Sunday, April 18. Info booths and music and planet-minded activities are on the roster. Say hi to the animals, our fellow earthlings, while you're there. Zoo admission gets you in.

And the California State Parks Foundation is hosting a state-wide love-on-the-parks day. There will be clean-up tasks, there will be some building, there will be some plant tending/clearing. Find your nearest park and get volunteering. Saturday, April 17
