Insect Fair, Pumpkin Beer, Gourds Galore

Calabasas has a pumpkin fest ahead; so does Pomona.

Throwing a pumpkin festival is one thing; throwing a pumpkin festival par excellence is another thing entirely.

If you want to do the first thing, really, all you need is a patch of pumpkinry and the people to come and buy them. If you want to do it up, big-style, and go the par excellence route, you'll want to hire some bands, round up some vittles, go the extra smile. Did we say smile?

The Calabasas Pumpkin Festival is happening on Saturday, Oct. 16 and Sunday, Oct. 17. Bands, lots of bands -- we see some disco on the roster -- plus pumpkin beer and various eats and bounce-housery. If you're really good at mummy-wrapping, you may win the mummy wrap contest. If you're really good at mummy-wrapping, you could possibly win the pie-eating contest, if you're really good at eating pies, too. A ticket is $5 at the fest.

The Pumpkin Festival at the Cal Poly Farm Store at Kellogg Ranch is also happening on Saturday, Oct. 16 and Sunday, Oct. 17. There will be a lot of gourd-lookie-loo-ing, plus animals to pet and horses to ride and insects -- a lot of insects. There is, in fact, a big Insect Fair going on during the festival. Get details on hours and other to-dos here. Oh, and admission is totally free.
