Kanye West Short Screens

Pairings in the entertainment business usually intrigue. The "Art of Song" night with Jewel and Michael Feinstein at the Hollywood Bowl a few days back caught our eye. And our eye is permanently caught, and entranced, by the David Bowie/Bing Crosby meet-up that gets a ton of play every holiday season. Magic.

This week's interesting, panache-ful pairing is Kanye West and Spike Jonze. They've made a short film -- "We Were Once a Fairytale" -- that word around online-town has it is quite the surreal feast. It's a 15-minute surreal feast, we should add, and it plays in the 7:45PM LA Shorts series on Wednesday, July 29 at the Laemmle Sunset 5.

Playing with Mr. West's and Mr. Jonze's short on the LA Shorts Fest sked: nine other films. Highlights: a shortie entitled "Free Doritos!" which already has our salt-craving heart. And "The Funk," a flick which sports one of the best, tersest blurbs ever: "Jack woke up in a Funk one day. No one really knows how it started." That's all we need to know.

Related, sort of: We just saw, again, the trailer for Mr. Jonze's "Where the Wild Things Are" and have decided we might have to get a Wild Thing suit of our own. Just for trips down to Ralphs. Those things are perfectly Sid-and-Marty-Krofftian. They're probably warm, too.
