The Year Without the Holiday Light Festival

Construction forces councilman to cancel annual event

Last year's news release for the LADWP Holiday Light Festival opened with a jovial take on the event: "It just wouldn't be the holidays in Los Angeles without the (LADWP) annual Holiday Light Festival in Griffith Park."

Well, it looks like this year, we won't be having the holidays in Los Angeles.

According to L.A. Now, the annual light festival has been canceled:

(City Councilman Tom LaBonge), whose district includes Griffith Park, said he asked the Department of Water and Power to cancel the festival because crews are installing a major water line at the site and expanding a parking lot near the L.A. Zoo. He said it would cost too much to put the project on hold during the holidays.

The display of lights is featured along a one-mile stretch of Crystal Springs Drive and attracts more than half million visitors each year, according to its website.

This year would have marked the 15th incarnation of the event.
