Pirouettes at Pershing

Buildings. Brrr-ing. The holidays arrive.

The charming, sometimes semi-annoying thing about Angelenos is we tend to think we do everything really well. Act? Got it. Model? Sure. Surf? Cowabunga. So when Downtown on Ice opens at Pershing Square, as it does every mid-to-late November, we love seeing people glide out onto the outdoor ice rink with so much confidence you'd think they have an ice pond year-round in their Encino backyard and drive a Zamboni to work down the 405.

Downtown's 2009 opener? Thursday, November 19th. If you wait for the 20th -- 11AM on the 20th, to be exact -- you can see the mayor and the Grinch give the official kick-off.

SoCalers and ice=charming. No matter that we take a few spills, and we overdress (nobody but nobody can over-scarf and over-mitten like an Angeleno hitting an outdoor ice rink on a 70-degree day), but we're so happy to be out of our element and onto the cool, shimmery frozen stuff. Well, we're still in our element -- sunshine -- but the ice is unusual for us. Unless it is clinking in our tea/cocktail glasses.

We call a nighttime ice-skating trip, followed by a drink at the Biltmore Hotel across the street, the perfect date. Remember, that's ice-skating first, then drink, not the other way around.

Downtown on Ice will be open daily through January 18, 2010.
