Red Bull Soapbox Race Coming to Downtown

The Red Bull Soapbox Race is returning to downtown Los Angeles.

Forty some teams will compete for soapbox glory on May 21, and there's still plenty of time to register. The application deadline is March 25, according to Red Bull.

Just like the 2009 course, racers will head down Grand Avenue, make a turn onto 5th Street and head toward the finish line in front of Pershing Square.

This is the event's second year in LA.

Speed counts but winners will also need to bring creativity and showmanship to take home glory, according to Red Bull:

In 2009 a heavy metal-inspired death machine, the Mach I from "Speed Racer" and the flying Winnebago from "Spaceballs" all graced the Los Angeles winner's podium. Also on the track were a giant brain, the creatures from "Where the Wild Things Are" and the DeLorean from "Back to the Future."

The event is free. Rules are posted online, as well as applications.
