It has been the summer of Marilyn Monroe, truly, though we like to think that moviedom's biggest legend is never not far from the fans' minds.
There was the Billy Wilder stamp she appeared on in May; then the 26-foot-tall "Forever Marilyn" statue arrived in downtown Palm Springs, where it will stay through June 2013 (the city has done much to fete the famous artwork; hotel deals and special film nights have been some of the happenings surrounding the artwork's arrival).
But all eyes have turned toward Sunday, Aug. 5, which is the 50th anniversary of the movie star's untimely death. For those who were alive in 1962, it still seems recent; to others it is the story, told again and again in books and documentaries and movies.
The commonality there, though, is that all fans, regardless of whether they loved Marilyn Monroe during her heyday or discovered her years later, want to celebrate her life. And so they shall, at Westwood Village Memorial Park, where the icon was famously laid to rest.
The date, as mentioned, is Aug. 5; the time is noon. And the service is open to the public.
Even if you can't make it, you can of course visit the cemetery to pay your respects whenever it is open. The two things that always stay with us are the fact that no matter when you visit, someone has left fairly recent, still-fresh flowers.
And two? All those lipstick kisses that have been left on the star's crypt over the years. Marilyn wasn't just a legend, in the end, but a person who moved and continues to move millions, a half century after she left us.
