Starry “Guys and Dolls” in Hollywood

Whether whatever a said guy may be up to, common wisdom has long held that he's doing it for some doll. Should we argue that point? We won't. We will, however, let one of the most famous lyrics from a time-honored music hold its own without us meddling or copping attitude about it.

Plus, what we'd like to be doing instead of copping attitude is packing a picnic for the Hollywood Bowl, where "Guys and Dolls" is playing for three nights -- Friday, July 31st through Sunday, August 2nd. And even if you're not a musical person -- and we think you are, deep down, probably -- you can't convince us you don't know at least *some* of the lyrics to "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?" -- you've got to show at least a glimmer of interest in this one-of-a-kind cast.

Here's why we're glimmering: Scott Bakula. "Quantum Leap" and "Enterprise" and all the shows that have been Bakula-den with his talents over the last couple of decades. Bakula-den. We may regret that one day, but not today.

Also, Jessica Biel, recently seen acting with Colin Firth in "Easy Virtue," which has us a mite envious. And Ellen Greene, who belted out, so memorably, "Suddenly Seymour" in "Little Shop of Horrors"; plants bloomed at her high Cs. And the always affable Beau Bridges joins. He's affable, but always with an edge, which makes us like him more.

An interesting cast. Three big nights. A celebrated work of the American Stage. Hollywood Bowl. Scott Bakula!
