Thousands of people stood in line for hours early Tuesday to receive a free turkey.

The event in South Los Angeles was sponsored by Jackson Limousine Service.

Volunteers began handing out the food, some of which was brought in on forklifts, at about 8 a.m. in the 3600 block of West Slauson Avenue. Organizers had 10,000 turkeys.

For the time in the event's history, organizers ran out of turkeys. By mid-afternoon, volunteers were giving away hams and chickens.
