Weekend: Celebrating San Gennaro

Hollywood rings with the sounds of accordion, bocce ball tourneys, and bingo.

SAN GENNARO TIME: The annual Italian Street Fair that takes over a good chunk by Hollywood High has an impressively out-sized name -- "The Galbani Italian Feast of San Gennaro Los Angeles" -- and it is an impressively out-sized extravaganza. Food booths -- hello, lovely lasagnas -- and bocce ball games and bingo playing and strolling accordionists all are part of the scene. Getting in is a fiver, if you're a grown-up, and you'll want to consider parking or transport, this being Tinseltown. Through Sunday, Sept. 30

UNDERWOOD FALL FESTIVAL: There's something rather magical and stress-quieting about driving out to Moorpark for the autumn-time Fall Harvest Festival at Underwood Family Farms. Before you even get there you're thinking of the large pumpkin patch, perfect for snapping photos of young pumpkin hunters, and the animals, like the famous goats, and all the little sweet, country fair games. Us? We want corn on the cob, to eat, and then we want to queue up for the corn cannons. Saturday, Sept. 29 through Halloween

LA COUNTY FAIR WRAPS: It's always a huge undertaking to put on the major late-summer Pomona-based spectacular; we can't imagine what goes into packing it up, too. But in-between? Games, concerts, tablescaping, award-winning craft brews, and deep-fried cookie dough. Aw, dang gum it, fair, we're missing you already; do we have to wait eleven more months? Ends Sunday, Sept. 30

CHINATOWN MOON FESTIVAL: The impressively large Harvest Moon is due on the horizon on Saturday, Sep. 29 -- well, early on Sunday, Sept. 30, if you want to quibble -- meaning that the historic Central Plaza in Chinatown'll be bustling with all sorts of to-dos (music, ping pong, eats, telescope-looking courtesy of Griffith Observatory). The cost? Free. Also? This party is 74 this year. Hooray!

WIGGLE WAGGLE WALK: It's not really right to say that one community loves its pooches over any other, but Pasadena is a dog town for sure; visit any park, and the always dog-filled Doo Dah Parade, to see that. This fundraiser helps out shelter dogs in the city, in all the loving ways -- blankets, vet care, et cetera. Want to join or donate? It's near the Rose Bowl on Sunday, Sept. 30.
