Weekend: Gyoza-Eating Contest

Also this weekend: Rocking on, on the Sunset Strip and a four-day BBQ festival so big, it's actually a "Bonanza"

NISEI WEEK: There are several events still to go at the Little Tokyo-based party. A sake tasting is on the roster, as are Taiko performances and Ondo dancing (which folds into the festival's closing ceremony). But bet a lot of people will show to see the Gyoza-eating competition on Saturday, Aug. 20. How many tasty dumplings can be eaten in a speedy manner? The record is 231 in ten minutes. Mull on that.

SUNSET STRIP MUSIC FESTIVAL: Yep, they're closing a big ol' chunk of the boulevard and installing a drum kit that sits on a roller coaster. What more is there to say? Well, Motley Crüe will be in the house, or the open-air, rather, plus a whole horde of other rock stars. Aug. 18-20

WATTSTAX AND RHINO RECORDS: Two bits of LA music history get the big-screen love over the weekend. "Wattstax" screens at the Hammer, for free; journey back to the Coliseum circa 1972 for a soulful extravaganza featuring Mavis Staples and The Bar-Kays. And Cinefamily has the world premiere of a documentary about Rhino Records. Both movies happen on Saturday, Aug. 20.

OC BBQ BONANZA: We were talking about this four-dayer yesterday, and we found it impossible to cease typing the words "VIP Rib Village" over and over. And now we've started again. Few concepts have piqued our sauce-focused interests as much. Aug. 18-21, Fountain Valley

A WEEKEND FULL OF ELVIS: The Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway in Palm Springs is doing up the tours and music on Saturday, Aug. 20. The OC Marketplace is paying tribute to Elvis in Hollywood on Sunday, Aug. 21. Confirmed: people in spangly jumpsuits and leis will be swaggling their shoulders and hips at both locations.
