Weekend: Calabasas Pumpkin Festival

The Calabasas Pumpkin Festival has a pumpkin pie eating contest and a professional pumpkin carver

EGYPTIAN THEATRE TURNS 90: A lot of movies love to show movie premieres, where actors playing other actors pull up to a glamorous theater and wave at the fans. This Hollywood cinema, along with the Chinese down the street, is very much an inspiration for all of those movie-based movie theaters, and other highly designed, real-life movie palaces. Sid Grauman designed it, of course. Want to raise a toast? The parties are on -- including a mummython -- through Sunday, Oct. 21.

VINTAGE FASHION EXPO: Sure, some people'll show up at the Santa Monica Civic to get the jump on their Halloween costume, if they're thinking of going with a '50s-era frock or something a bit disco. But bet most of the shoppers at this every-so-often treasure-find'll be looking to stock their closets with that interesting, chevron-patterned scarf that just says Paris circa 1962. Saturday, Oct. 20 and Sunday, Oct. 21

CALABASAS PUMPKIN FESTIVAL: If we were to pull out the word "jamboree" for this long-running autumn to-do, we wouldn't be over-the-top by any means. Yep, there are pumpkins to buy, hence the name, but there are other sweet add-ons, like carnival games, craft shopping, beer sipping for the big people, music, and an inflatable slide. C'mon. Inflatable slide absolutely equals jamboree, in our book. Saturday, Oct. 20 and Sunday, Oct. 21.

ROCKTOBERFEST AT LA LIVE: Wolfgang Puck, Gene Simmons, Oktoberfest-style partying, one glitzy venue. Should we type more words? Okay, a few more: The beer-and-authentic-eats bash is on through Sunday, Oct. 21 and you'll need a ticket. Will you see the chef or KISS star in the mix? Perhaps, or maybe you'll simply have a rollicker of a time, celeb sighting or no. It is called "rocktoberfest" after all, so you just gotta.

BREWERY ARTWALK: It's free, yes, and it happens twice a year, sure, and it is set among some 5 Freeway-close buildings that look as if they were constructed solely to be in an arty noir movie. But this weekend-long look-around gets our props because the artists live in the places you're walking through. Call it a gallery stroll and a home tour, all at once. How often do you walk through a kitchen to get to an exhibit? Saturday, Oct. 20 and Sunday, Oct. 21
