Weekend: Port of LA Lobster Festival

In a month of big lobster fests, the Port of LA party lifts its cup of melted butter high.

PORT OF LA LOBSTER FESTIVAL: September is the month of crustacean celebrations around SoCal, but let's cut to the chase on this San Pedro affair: The Guinness Book of World Records awarded it, back in 2009, the title of "Most Seafood Served at an Outdoor Event." Is it big? It is indeed. Is there a lot of lobster-melted butter action? So much. Are there things to keep lobster lovers busy, like tunes and entertainment? Indeed. The bib bash goes down from Friday, September 14 through Sunday, September 16.

CALIFORNIA COASTAL CLEAN-UP DAY: Surely you've heard we have a beach or two here in California? We jest; loving our famous coastline is a Golden State way of life. So is caring for it, which we do, en masse, every year at this time. Thousands of volunteers will gather on the sand, as well as at inland waterways, to collect over a million pounds of trash. Date's Saturday, Sept. 15. Important? Definitely.

MUMBO GUMBO: Chef Claud Beltran's annual savory stew party has become one of the foodie must-attends on the Pasadena calendar. Why? Well, the eating is good and Big Easy-authentic. There's Bananas Foster, to boot. And the day raises funds for Rosemary Children's Services. Boston Court Theatre Backlot is the place, Sunday, Sept. 16 is the date.

TAR PITS PLAYS: What if you had to write a brief, ten-minute presentation, with drama, and scientific grounding, about the La Brea Tar Pits? It isn't an easy task, given that the animals trapped in the tar long ago were, spoiler alert, not known for memorizing lines of dialogue. But a bevy of playwrights have taken on the challenge, and the Page Museum is the location for the stagings. Weekends through Sunday, Sept. 23

STAN LEE'S COMIKAZE EXPO: The most famous man in comic-book-dom launched his own pop culture convention last year, and the fans showed in droves. They will again this year, when the con hits the LA Convention Center on Saturday, Sept. 15 and Sunday, Sept. 16. Bonus? Air-conditioning. But a lot of people'll be in bulky costumes, too, so we suppose it all kind of levels out. Stay hydrated, Iron Men.
