    NEWSLETTERS

DineLA Restaurant Week starts Sunday. Time to check in on your favorite restaurants or check out new ones, and take advantage of dining deals. (Published Friday, Jan. 20, 2012)

dineLA: It's the 5th year for our city's most out-sized dinner party. The headline? Over 300 restaurants will participate; Ford's Filling Station, pictured above, is one. The subheadline? The lunch and dinner deals are solid; think prix fixe, multiple courses, star dishes. The deeper content? Savings for you, the diner, and a chance to try places you keep putting off. Stop that. Sunday, Jan. 22 through Friday, Feb. 3 (Saturday, Jan. 28 is dark.)

ART, ART, ART, ART: And more art. January tends to be a pretty art-heavy month 'round these parts, what with all of the major exhibitions that spring up in hangars and convention centers and such. But this coming weekend? The mondoest of all. LA Art Show, the Print Fair, the Fine Art Show, the Pacific Standard Time Performance and Public Art Festival, the Affordable Art Fair, and Art Los Angeles Contemporary all happily crowd the calendar. Places, times, prices, and wow-o-sity will vary.

"OVO" OPENS: Or should we say "OVO" cracks open, instead? The word does, of course, reference an egg. And the Cirque du Soleil show, set to start big-top-ing it up at the Santa Monica Pier on Friday, Jan. 20, is about the teensy world of bugs. "IRIS" is temporarily shuttering over at the Kodak, to make way for the Oscars, note. We're getting to be a city where there's always a Cirque show somewhere. What do you think of that, Vegas? (Just joshing. We love you, Vegas! Pals? Meet us at the Peppermill for a shrimp cocktail?)

MARVELOUS MÉLIÈS: If you saw "Hugo" you got to know Georges Méliès, the early special effects wizard behind "A Trip to the Moon." Now American Cinematheque is running a program of the pioneer's shorts on Sunday, Jan. 22 at the Aero. Note that Monsieur Méliès' "Moon" will not screen (it will show at a February event), but the titles of the films set to show definitely tempt. "Hat of Many Surprises"? "The Triple Conjurer and the Living Head"? Heart sparkles.

POLAR SPLASH: While most run-into-the-ocean-in-winter-for-a-good-cause events happen around New Year's Day, this Long Beach brouhaha is going down on Saturday, Jan. 21. Justin Rudd's Community Action Team'll donate ten bucks to a local charity for each splasher who makes the plunge (up to two grand, note). It's going to be pretty wet on Saturday already. Game?
