Almost Back Baking: Doughboys

A favorite meet-place is set to reopen.

The bathtub-sized bowls of soup hooked us, but everyone had their Doughboys must-get. The red velvet cake. The hummingbird cake, all mashy banana softness? The cream of roasted garlic soup on a foggy afternoon.

Delicious.

The small bakery-breakfast-lunch-dinner-coffee-hang-out, located for years in the stretch of West Third between Fairfax and La Cienega, was a city staple for savory and sweet eats and casual, dress-down meetings. Then it went away (there was a long story behind this, oft-told around OnlineLand, and the full account can be read here).

But it is returning, lo about Monday, January 18th, and once again we can garlic out to our stomach's content. The menu looks very much the same, and while the space is a wee bit smaller, it has that light-wood Doughboys vibe.

If you drive by before the 18th, you'll likely see people milling and you'll be tempted to stop. The restaurant's still putting the final touches on, so keep on driving. But very soon, we'll all be sitting on that sidewalk again, sharing The Monster in all its bready cheesy goodness.
