Pie Day, Happy Day

How are you marking this whipped-creamiest of occasions?

As far as national days named after various specific foodstuffs go, National Pie Day is pretty well placed.

Figure. It comes in the winter, when we're all more inclined toward items of a piely nature. It arrives a few weeks after the holidays, allowing us time to begin our exercise regimens and enjoy a few results. So we can treat ourselves with a slice. And it arrives far in advance of Valentine's Day, meaning it won't mess with the February supremacy of the box of chocolates.

Sunday, Jan. 23 is the 2011 date for this sugar-and-dairy day, and, lucky us, we have one or two places in town where we can get pie. (Fun fact: The pie-serving diner in "Twin Peaks" was located not in Washington state but rather our own Balboa Boulevard.)

We may not be able to share a slice with Agent Dale Cooper, but we can mark the holiday at spots like Marie Callender's, a chain that happens to be very much in the pie business. To celebrate Pie Month, they've got a "Perfect Pie Trio" available for $9.99 (there's Shepard's Pie or Chicken Pot Pie involved, so, score.)

That Red Velvet Pie is still a must-try for us. The restaurant chain says it is available through March 31.
