Today in Restaurant Week: blue on blue

Even if you're completely game to dive headlong into dineLA Restaurant Week, and you have a little cash, and you have a compliment-garnering get-up, it is hard to know where to start. For us, like many people, we start with a craving for a type of food, a particular dish, wanting to sample a specialty that has brought an eatery fame.

But, nearly as often, we think about another component: a special setting. Lucky thing that blue on blue at the oh-so-"Mad-Men"-meets-California Avalon Hotel boasts both praised cuisine and good looks. Crispy Jidori Chicken is on the Restaurant Week menu, along with grits (it is always the grits with us, every single time we're out). Other selections to think -- fantasize? -- about include seared scallops, crispy salmon (with purple mustard, no less), and spinach and chicarone salad.

And that eye candy? The hotel's famous, perfectly azure pool that you dine next to, or very near. (If it is chilly out, grab a seat where you can keep watch on the watery wonder). Looking out at that painting-perfect mid-century pool, we can almost pretend summer has arrived. Sip our wine, pretend, sip a bit more...
