Mammoth Mountain is one of the few U.S. ski spots to regularly push into late spring, and then summer, and when it announces it'll go for August? Which is the summer month that neighbors a month that contains the start of fall?
It can almost feel like the Sierra Nevada can rock the year-round skiing.
But alas, August skiing was not to be for the 2018-2019 season, though incredibly snowy it proved to be. (How snowy was it? This snowy: May 2019 saw the biggest snowfall on Mammoth Mountain record.)
For while the destination had announced, in late May, that it would push into August, it is wrapping its snow show on Sunday, July 28, 2019.
Which, really, when you think about it, is August Eve Eve Eve Eve. We'll say the mountain practically made it to that fabled eighth month.
"Mother Nature has been turning up the heat recently," says a social post from the mountain people, and the snow is doing that thing that snow does so well when it meets hot sun: melting.

Which means that summertime has been favoring Mammoth-area hiking and biking conditions in recent weeks, and play at the lakes, and wildflowers, too, which is a cue that is just about time to stash the poles and slip on the helmet or hiking boots.
Maybe not just yet, though? You still have a week and a few days to schuss under the July sun.
And if you do stash your poles, don't stick them too far back in the closet: Mammoth Mountain's opening day for the 2019-2020 season is Nov. 9, 2019, which is less than a third of a year away.
