Presley Plates: LA's Elvis-Themed Eats

Have a bite in honor of The King's birthday.

There are so many iconic items surrounding Elvis Presley -- and, moreover, the legend of Elvis Presley -- that the glitzy jumpsuit and rhinestone-laden jackets and slicked-back pompadour and tight-at-the-hips trousers can block out the fact that The King also did regular things, like you and me.

Like dine on some of his favorite foodstuffs. Of course, even the edibles of Elvis have reached jumpsuit status, for many a fan still knows of his affections for the good grub of Graceland, like those famous peanut-butter-and-bacon-and-banana sandwiches (fried to perfection, natch).

So what does an Elvis maven do on Jan. 8 each year, the anniversary of the "Love Me Tender" legend's birth? Well they find a tribute show, if they can, or throw some vinyl down on the hi-fi, and they locate some luscious eats, Presley-style.

Some local SoCal spots are paying tribute to one of the greatest of the greats with a host of delectable, Presley-perfect dishes. Swivel those hips and jauntily point your arm toward...

Mendocino Farms: It's a one-week-only special -- and that week begins on Jan. 8, natch -- so find your local shop for the PB3, which includes "peanut butter, Applewood smoked bacon, caramelized bananas, honey roasted almonds, and green apples." Sounds perfectly zingy, and Kingly, too.

Manhattan Beach Post: You're longing for dessert -- one created out of "chocolate pudding, peanut butter mousse, and bacon brittle," and you need to ask for it by name. Simple stuff here: Request The Elvis and see the gooey goodness that arrives on the table before you.

Greenspan's Grilled Cheese: There's another dish called The Elvis in town, but this one includes Nutella in the mix. Look for a yummy sandwich full of the hazelnutty spread, banana, and peanut butter cream cheese. Is bacon in the line-up? You bet.

Salt & Straw: The Larchmont ice-creamery has a flavor called Happy Birthday, Elvis in the case, and it indeed includes bacon and peanut butter as well as malted banana pudding ice cream. Oh, and the peanut butter? They're peanut butter Oreos, let it be known.
