Sweet Alley Dreams: Fewer Cars, More Cobblestone

There's been lots of chatter lately about transforming the city's alleys into green spaces and European-like settings that'd hold cafes and shops. So it's fairly exciting to see the latest renderings from architecture firm Killefer Flamang for the Selma Hotel located near the corner of Selma and Cahuenga. This alley, which would run alongside the hotel, is only about a half block long, but we'll take it. Karin Liljgren, from Killefer Flamang, fills us in: "The restaurant entrances would be on Cahuenga and the back patios and dining would be located in the alley...the alley would create a friendly, hip and engaging [space.]" Local developer Five Chairs is behind the project, and the next step is to submit plans of the whole project to the building department. As far as a ground-breaking date, the "optimistic" guess is this summer, according to Liljgren.

Project description: An existing 1920's two-story parking garage in Hollywood is transformed into a bold and sensuous 100-room boutique hotel.

Adjacent to an alley which will be transformed into a lively outdoor dining and retail street, the Hotel Selma adds four new levels of guest rooms on top of the existing garage. The garage has been carved out for a valet and lobby entry off the alley, and a bar restaurant engages the street corner. The new floors will be physically set apart from the existing building below and will create a distinctive block skinned with expansive glass, metal siding and glowing light boxes. The top two levels will house the restaurant, bar, pool and lounge areas. These lushly landscaped spaces enjoy incredible views from the Hollywood Hills to the Pacific Ocean.
