Touring Lautner's Jacobsen Residence in Hollywood Hills

And concluding the tour of John Lautner-designed homes (all these homes were shown last weekend as part of the Hammer Museum's current Lautner retrospective), we look at one of his earlier and more modest homes, the Jacobsen Residence (1947). It was built the same time as the neighboring Polin House (now owned by nightlife impresario Brent Bolthouse) and features a hexagonal steel and timber frame roof system suspended from three tapered steel truss columns. The roof was built first as a free-standing structure, with the walls constructed after. As a result, there are no load-bearing walls, allowing for a flexible floor plan. The house has undergone extensive renovation but the concrete floor and radian heating are original, as is the living room's terrace.
