Fruity New Social Scene

Topanga Farmers Market open Fridays starting in December.

In cooler climes, farmers markets are a fleeting charm. They tease with a few short weeks of juicy berries, sweet tomatoes, and crisp fall apples. Once the first frost comes, poof -- it's back to frozen veggie time. Not in LA. Farmers markets here are a year-round social scene. People are more into local and organic foods. And the weather makes haggling with vendors and flirting with the cutie next to you squeezing melons an evergreen attraction. Street buskers serenade, free movie tickets are hawked, politics are discussed. Some even serve alcohol.

So when a fresh market pops up, we start to salivate over the promise of more free fruit samples, goats' milk cheeses and wafting incense. Enter the new Topanga Canyon Market, opening December 5th at the Westfield Topanga Promenade. The venture promises a Certified Farmers Market, plus live entertainment, artisan vendors and vintage and collectible items.

We're particularly intrigued by the time: Fridays from 3-8PM. When we think about the good people of upscale Woodland Hills coming together over berries and potatoes under the stars with the funky Topanga folks, our hearts brim with hope for a future of full-blown Friday night street parties. And free fruit.
