Things to Do This Week: Descanso After Hours

Golden Road visits the La Cañada Flintridge gardens for an evening of tastings.

Descanso After Hours: Our public gardens remain open, even as temperatures zing upwards, but if you aren't feeling a daytime visit, there are other ways to enjoy the natural beauty. Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge has an after-hours event on Thursday, Aug. 9, from 5 to 8 in the evening. That means you can stroll under those celebrated oaks at sundown and enjoy suds, too, at a Golden Road Brewing tasting. How to enter this verdant space on a summer's eve? Your Descanso admission gets you in, oh yeah. Another "oh yeah"? Food is available for purchase.

National Night Out: Looking forward to gathering together with neighbors at this "national community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood cameraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live"? Tuesday, Aug. 7 is the date, and you can find participating groups and destinations at the event's online headquarters. Locate the closest-to-you happening now.

Aqualillies Summer Watershow: Few performers wove together an athletic pursuit and acting like Esther Williams so amazingly did, and swimming, and the movies, were forever changed. To honor this legend's memory, the synchronized swimming troupe spends an evening each August paying tribute to the birthday of Ms. Williams via a free-to-see show. The 2018 presentation will dive, with precision and grace, at Hotel Figueroa on Wednesday, Aug. 8 beginning at 7 in the evening. You can RSVP on Facebook. And if you buy a bev at the bar, know that 10% of the price will help out USA Synchro.

"SoCal Wanderer" Debuts: So you absolutely love to explore every nook, cranny, funky out-of-the-way spot, and beloved landmark of Southern California, but time is always too short? Rosey Alvero can show you some of the most splendid and memorable destinations around our region on this newest travelogue offering from KCET. It premieres on Tuesday, Aug. 7 with a journey many a SoCaler knows or longs to try: Anacapa to Ojai. Where will Ms. Alvero head next? Put on your explorer's hat and stay tuned...

"The Big Lebowski": Never have the words "the Dude abides" seem truer, for this Coen Bros. classic is turning 20 in 2018. The Los Angeles locales, though, that the humor-filled caper visits? They're pretty timeless, from Malibu to downtown to the Dude's Venice-cool neighborhood. To catch all of those on the big screen is a treat, and all too rare, but check it out: Fathom Events is screening the Dude's adventures on Wednesday, Aug. 8, in partnership with TCM, at select cinemas. Is there one near you? Pour a White Russian and peruse now.
