Twilight on the Pier: Not having to secure a ticket, nor shell out cash, to groove at an iconic location to a fabtabulous line-up of music acts grouped into theme nights? That's pure September sunshine. Wednesday, Sept. 5 is the first night of this free-to-see series, with Latin Wave serving as the kick-off theme. Still to come in the coming weeks at Santa Monica Pier? Australia Rocks the Pier, Island Vibes, Eclectic Indie, Afro Beat and R&B, and South Asian Sounds. Note? All shows are on Wednesday nights, except for the final show, which rocks Sunday, Oct. 7.
Burbank Film Festival: Those midweek doldrums have a way of vamoosing when one heads to a cinema, it's true. And if there happens to be a film festival kicking off? One that brims with interesting flicks and red-carpet sightings and the buzz that buzzes when new works roll out, festival-style? A cineaste's week can take a turn for the awesome. The AMC 16 Theaters is the bustling hub, Wednesday, Sept. 5 is opening day, and "The Catcher Was a Spy" is the movie that opens the busy, five-day party.
Yappy Hour at Ashland Hill: Just because the traditional summer season has wrapped doesn't mean that dogly fun, like Yappy Hours, have trotted away. It is, after all, still technically summer, and this Santa Monica restaurant will celebrate that fact, and our Fido pals, on Tuesday, Sept. 4. The Lange Foundation and Healthy Spot are partnering with Ashland Hill to place adoptable dogs in loving homes. Bonus: There's a dog menu for the 5 to 8 p.m. event, making pups in attendance even tail-waggier.
What to do, where to go and what to see
Throwback Flicks at El Capitan: You know that the El Cap, in the heart of Hollywood, is the place to go for the newest Disney fare, but what about flicks from a decade, two, or three ago? The historic cinema pauses to celebrate the classics, too, which it is currently doing with screenings of 1988's "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" The toons-meets-people comedy brings Toontown to Hollywood, but there are more favorite to come, including "Enchanted" and "Flubber." Is your favorite Disney film on the schedule? Peek now.
Beer & Ice Cream Social: You could easily describe both a glass of something foamy and a cup of something cold and scoopable as "creamy" and "flavorful," though beer is, well, beer, and ice cream rules its own dessert-themed sector. But it isn't difficult to see them meld into one a memorable night of sipping 'n licking, which will happen at Eagle Rock Brewery on Thursday, Sept. 6. Eat Your Feelings is behind the fancy ice creams, and, yep, you'll need to be age 21 or older. The hours are 6 to 9 in the evening, which feels like a prime suds-to-sweets window.
