Weekend: Cinco de Mayo

Several restaurants welcome May 5 with margaritas and music.

CINCO CELEBRATIONS: May 5 is a Sunday this year, meaning a number of spots'll get the Cinco de May party going on Saturday. Or even Friday, as Border Grill is doing; the Downtown LA and Santa Monica locations'll be offering $5 specials on margaritas, beer, and Sonoran Hot Dogs throughout the weekend. (Mmm, Sonoran Hot Dogs...) Mission Cantina on Sunset is going with Cuatro and Cinco to-dos -- have a margarita before photo-booth-ing it -- while the new Cinco near the airport will have mariachi tunes and fancy tequila shots a-flowin'. Wherever you go, make Olvera Street a must-stop on either weekend day. Tunes and kid haps are part of the holiday tradition.

ITEMS FROM THE HOPE ESTATE: Crystal, silver, luggage, lamps, and other personal items from the home of Bob and Dolores Hope's home will go on sale on Saturday, May 4 at St. Charles Borremeo Holy Family Services Center in Toluca Lake. Money raised from the event will help the center. Do arrive with cash. The sale may continue into Sunday, May 5, say organizers.

KENTUCKY DERBY: Mint Juleps may jostle alongside margaritas for the weekend's premiere libation, given the fact that a certain horse race gallops on Saturday, May 4. Where will you prance about in your giant, flower-laden hat? There are a number of choices around SoCal, but we keep thinking about the posh pecan pie at Tom Bergin's. It's a Thanksgiving treat, true, but it also belongs very much to Derby Day.

BIG SUNDAY WEEKEND: One of our state's biggest volunteer days, the first Sunday in May, has become so large that it now fills a three-day weekend. Good thing, too; people sign up, and fill up, all of those help-the-community-out slots. There are several opportunities left, though, so have a look at the list. What do you like to do? Paint, garden, weed, lend support? You're needed.

HOLLYWOOD BOWL SINGLE TICKETS: The first Saturday in May is a major time for those SoCalers who love their music live and their performing arts iconic. Yep, that's the day when the Hollywood Bowl puts its individual tickets on sale. Box office opens at 10am, but the wristbands, and hope-filled milling, begins much earlier in the day. What will you see this summer? She & Him, Queen Latifah, Pink Martini...
