Weekend: Happy St. Patrick's Day

Special treats, lots of music, and that mega DTLA block party are feeling the Erin Go Bragh vibes.

St. Patrick's Day: Searching for your perfect cèilidh on Sunday, March 17? There are oodles of Erin Go Bragh bashes around Southern California, with possibly the most robust happening at Casey's Irish Pub's giant street festival in DTLA. Look also to the Tam O'Shanter for live tunes and Irish beers, Original Farmers Market for a free daylong party, a Shamrock Social at Ashland Hill, a boilermaker dinner at Chez Melange, food/drink specials at The Morrison Pub, games and "family fun" at TRADE Food Hall, and loads of offbeat holiday eats and drinks to try.

"Dogs! A Science Tail" opens: We know how it is, on your couch, after toy time, but before the treats come out. There are cuddles, there's some ball-throwing, and there's a whole lot of marveling at your marvelous pup. How to know your lil' guy so much better, from the science angle? Get to California Science Center, starting on Saturday, March 16, for this seriously engaging, hands-on exhibit. Live dog demos are also a part, and the IMAX movie "Superpower Dogs," a separately ticketed event, is just a minute away from the exhibit. Woof.

Butterfly Pavilion opens: Look, this is the truth. There are A LOT of butterflies flitting about our area at the moment, Painted Ladies on the migratory trail, to be specific, but we all know what is what: This amazing moment can't last forever. Just in time to address our butterfly blues, though, will be this annual pop-up, at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, where all sorts of gorgeous b-flies'll be doing their fluttering thing. You'll learn about the insects, too, as well as, just maybe, finding one on your arm. Enjoy, before it flutters off. March 17-Sept. 2

Kitten Shower: Perhaps things haven't been super-sweet on your end lately, but there's a way to find whiskery joy, in Mission Hills, on Saturday, March 16. That's when the Best Friends Animal Society's Kitten Shower will take place, which is all about finding good-of-heart people who can "foster, volunteer, or donate" to help out some of the tiniest and most tender of our animal friends. The hours are 1 to 3 in the afternoon, a list of needed items is up, and the event is free to join. Been thinking you needed more feline magic in your world? Start here, give back, and help out a great org.

Sierra Madre Wistaria Festival: Growing a plant, especially one that produces flowers, isn't always the easiest task. But imagine if you had the World's Largest Blossoming Plant, per the "Guinness Book of World Records" in your yard, a purple-flowery wonder that is turning 125 in 2019. It would be a huge deal, for sure, and so it is: The world-famous wistaria will be open for public viewing on Sunday, March 17. There's a festival, too, in the village, making for one very sweet, spring's-nearly-here day.
