Truck Driver in 101 Crash Arrested on Suspicion of DUI

The big rig crashed through the center divider and into eastbound lanes

A trucker was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of drunken driving after a big rig slammed into the center divider of the Ventura (101) Freeway and collided with a minivan, whose driver was seriously hurt, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The trucker suffered lesser injuries in the crash, which occurred about 6:10 a.m. on the eastbound 101 Freeway near Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Studio City.

Ambulances transported the injured to two hospitals, Providence Saint Joseph Medical and Cedars Sinai Medical Center, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Four eastbound lanes were closed, along with one westbound lane, while an investigation was conducted and the wreckage was cleared. All lanes had been reopened by about 10 a.m., but the center divider of the freeway was badly damaged and needs repair.

According to the preliminary investigation, the big rig was eastbound when it crashed into the center divider and collided with the minivan, said CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos.

Chunks of concrete ended up on freeway lanes, and some other vehicles were damaged.

Authorities did not immediately release the names of the trucker or the minivan driver.
