The 91 Freeway through Corona was shut down Tuesday night after a police shooting left one man dead and traffic snarled for miles.
The road was reopened at about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Shortly after 8 p.m. firefighters were called to an accident scene on the eastbound lanes of the 91 Freeway just east of Main Street. Moments later, firefighters heard gunfire and fled with one of the car accident victims.
Authorities said arriving CHP and Corona officers encountered a man with a gun and shots were exchanged. No officers were injured but the gunman was killed.
Both sides of the 91 Freeway were shut down as authorities investigated the crime scene.
A law enforcement source told NBC4 a rifle was found near the person who was killed by police.
Images from a news helicopter showed firefighters and police officers trying to revive the wounded suspect. That person was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
It was also unclear if the incident Tuesday evening was related to a rash of freeway robberies stretching back to September.
