5 Freeway Reopens North of Los Angeles

Another round of wet weather is expected by mid-week

The 5 Freeway was reopened early Monday after it was closed for hours due to snow and ice as a winter blast swept across Southern California's mountains.

The road was shut down northbound near State Route 138 and southbound at Grapevine Road as of 7:09 p.m., according to Caltrans. Earlier in the day, Caltrans had warned drivers about snow starting to stick onto the road, the main north-south route through California's Central Valley.

The closure came during a street of cool and wet weather across Southern California. Strong winds were in the Monday morning forecast.

Gusts of 35 miles per hour were expected in the San Gabriel and Santa Monica mountains, the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys, and the Los Angeles coastal zone, which consists of beach cities, metropolitan Los Angeles, downtown LA, and the Hollywood Hills.

Northwest to north winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour gusting to 50 mph were blowing across the San Gabriels but was blowing at 15-25 mph with 40-mph gusts in the valleys.

Also in effect -- until 8 a.m. -- was a freeze warning in the Santa Clarita Valley and a frost warning in the San Fernando Valley and the Santa Monica Mountains.

But a winter weather advisory denoting highly challenging travel conditions was allowed to expire in the San Gabriel Mountains in LA and Ventura counties.
