High Surf to Pound Southern California Coast

Expect dangerous wave conditions along the beaches through Thursday evening

High surf will continue to hammer the Southern California coast this week as strong winds sweep mountain areas amid more high heat, with highs again reaching the mid-80s.

A high surf advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday until 10 p.m.  Thursday in Los Angeles and Orange counties, with forecasters expecting surf of  between 5 and 10 feet, with maximum sets of 12 feet, according to the National Weather Service. Stronger surf is expected north of Los Angeles County.

A large, long-period west swell will create dangerous wave conditions along the beaches Wednesday morning through Thursday evening. A beach hazards statement, which is a notch below a high surf advisory, will be in force through Thursday evening in Los Angeles County.

Beach erosion is likely and minor coastal flooding is possible, such as beach parking lots and walkways, in Ventura and LA counties.

Also scheduled -- until 3 p.m. -- is a wind advisory for the San Gabriel Mountains, where forecasters expect winds of between 20 and 30 miles per hour, gusting to 45 mph. The strongest winds will occur along the 5 Freeway corridors north of Los Angeles.

Temperatures, meanwhile, will remain around 15 degrees above normal.
